could be a mounting plate for an old autohelm control box, the ones with a compass dial on the top.

I agree, I remember the tiller pilot on my Sadler about 15 years ago having a fixing bracket like that.

Sounds like the 2 I have mounted on my transom, I have seen davits slotted into similar but I have 2 rod holders that fit into them, I wouldn't have thought they would hold much weight as davit mounts.
I also have 2 wooden poles that fit the rod holders that I assume were for a makeshift bimini of some sort.

I've just noticed that's the same thing I think, isn't it?

I don't have anything to fit it but I guess it can be used for a number of purposes.
