I can't post a pic at the moment so I'll describe the item as best I can.

Polished stainless steel plate approx 3..75"/95mm square, 2mm thick, four countersunk mounting holes dia 8mm one in each corner . At first sight it looks like a small ventilation louvre with two slots, but........the two pressed out steps approx 75mm long, face each other and are tapered the "opening" at the top is about 52mm and about 48mm the other (lower?) end. It obviously allows some item to sit in it securely, locked in.

Any ideas please?

Compass mount or similar?

I think I've seen something similar used for compasses. It seems far too big and strong for that job.

Now I think about it the nearest thing I've seen before is the mount for the Autohelm 2000 electronics box:

The item I have is a really posh thing though.

Edit:
This is very close to what I have:, an Auxiliary Engine Mounting Plate:

Its clearly designed to hold something that either has weight itself, or will be subject to weight from above.....mounting point for the support beam for a roll-out bunk-bed, one of a pair?

Best bet is to throw it away. That way you're pretty much guaranteed to find the mating piece the week after. Then you'll know what it was for.

Is it for mounting an anchor on the guard rails? 2 U-bolts would fix it in place.
I bought a mount for my Fortress from West Marine in the US a couple of weeks ago. It's adjustable for different sizes of anchor but would look very similar if it was for a specific size

I had thought of that one, something to build a cot with. I can get a few of them so might look into doing that.

I'll try and post a picture later

Sounds like the 2 I have mounted on my transom, I have seen davits slotted into similar but I have 2 rod holders that fit into them, I wouldn't have thought they would hold much weight as davit mounts.
I also have 2 wooden poles that fit the rod holders that I assume were for a makeshift bimini of some sort.

I bought one for my danforth but it is not tapered and has more support at the bottom. I can see where you are coming from though.
