Hi there,

Looking for some advice on a Mariner 20e 6a9 year approx 1983.

Bought the motor from a guy who did a garage clearance, so no little about the history. Best guess is that it had been sitting in storage for 15-20 years :-)

Plan to fit it to a Shetland 535 - Refurb project!

After some tinkering managed to get it started off an electric switch (Yamaha 704 OEM China copy i think) which was bought separately, and after rigging it up to a battery & new fuel tank/line.

I know little about outboards, but there is a little water coming from the exhaust, and also the tell tale which would suggest its pumping water ok. BUT noticed that there is also quite a strong stream coming from the inside of the prop shaft housing through 2 small holes? Video link below:

Main question - is this normal?

Also, any advice on main things to think about checking/servicing before taking it out for the first time would be greatly appreciated :-)

From research, should I be thinking about checking/changing gearbox oil? Any seals need replacing for a motor that has been left in storage for so long? Carb cleaning etc?

Also one other question, there is a buzzer on the switch that continuously buzz’s even after the motor is running, could this just mean the switch wiring isn’t fully compatible with this motor? From what I’ve tested it’s the pink wire on the switch connecting to the pink wire through the motor loom.

Sorry for all the question, I’m a bit of a newbie to boating.

Thanks in advance!

I am no expert but I think that is normal. I doubt a 20hp engine will put a 535 on the plane.
Does it go in and out of gear ok? At least check the oil level and for water (milky appearance). I would change the oil.
You can't run it under load in a barrel, can you run it in gear on the boat tied to a pontoon say?
No idea about the buzzer.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

The plan is just plodding up and down the Thames so no need for getting her up on a plane.

The motor appears to be going into gear fine, forward/reverse.

The main concern was the flow of water coming from the inside of the prop shaft, just seemed an odd place for quite a lot of water to come out.

Had a shocking couple of days weather but will check the oil next. I believe there is 2 screws in the bottom of the motor, is the best to just take them both out to drain? Is there a special tool to re-fill or are there any tips on what to use?

Thanks again!

Yes two screws out and drain. if its straight oil go to refilling.
Iif its grey mayonnaise. Sort out the leak, clean the gear box, reassemble and then go to refilling.

Refilling
Usual way is to have a flexible oil bottle of suitable capacity and a bit of "correct " size PVC tube. tube goes from oil bottle into / firmly onto the bottom hole. Invert bottle and squeeze in oil until it starts dribbling out of the top hole. Pause filling, without removing the tube of oil, and fit the top set screw firmly . Have bottom set crew ready remove tube and rapidly fit bottom screw and tighten. Sometimes you need 5 hands to do this.

Job done

Regards Clive
