hello
I have an old manual hyspeed, S-L I think, that is siezed, I have managed gradually to remove the gypsy & clutch cone on one end and the drum off the other but the mainshaft is solid, the levered operating spindle only moves about 5 mm and doesnt release anything.
I would like to get the main cover off to see what is happening, the small set screws are all out but its solid, also removed/chiselled a cork bush? from around the shaft.
I have a diagram off all the parts but no service instructions. does anyone know if the shaft has to be knocked out from the other end to release the cover late or should it lever off? or maybe there is another way??
thanks!

Lever of the cover. It took a while and I feared for it but it came off. Bush is tight on the mainshaft. Did mine (new to me this year) and it all went back ok and works like a dream. Sounds like chains might be jammed or the sprockets rusted solid. You can't knock the mainshaft through because it has the sprockets on it.

With the gypsy and cone off then the cover plate should come off without any further removal. Having got the drum off you should be able to get the whole thing to bits as the shaft comes out of the gypsy side. It would seem to me that corrosion is now your problem. once you have the plate off you will need to undo the chain links at one end to release it and allow the shaft to be removed. Your next problem will be removing the bike sprockets as they will probably be seized and they are a bas***d to get off as hauling chain tightens them. I ended up getting them ground off by a local engineer. The threads are very fine. The sprockets are 18tpi single speed bike ones and the chain is the same. When reassembling you put both sprockets on the same way and one of the chains goes over idles and around the back of the sprocket to get the shaft turning on both strokes of the handle. I has the outer case powder coated while it was stripped.
As you can tell I have been there and done it and the tee shirt is full of oil!

excellent, lots of info there, will have another bash tomorrow, am I right in saying the bushes are cork & did you source new ones? the one I removed was not quite saveable!
thanks
