Help buy a new boat from Europe to UK

I’m considering buying a new boat from Europe to UK, (under 20 feet, no engine). I understand the VAT in EU is normally already paid, I need to pay 20% VAT in UK again and 10% import duty. Some brokers in EU don’t even sell to UK buyers anymore, after Brexit.

How practically can I actually do this? How do I “import” it to UK?
Are there people or companies transport and import for me and manage the whole process and paperwork, or is it something or process I should or can manage myself?
Is it possible to buy a boat in EU without paying EU VAT?
Other than all above, is there anything I missed and need to do?

Many thanks

Welcome

Assume you are buying used rather than new. If new then you can buy without EU VAT and pay in the UK If used then essentially the process is the same. You cannot claim back the EU VAT. You have to pay UK vAT and also have the boat certified. Although the UK now has its own certification they will currently accept EU certification (CE mark) but you will need all the original documentation.

You are right, the trade of boats between the EU and UK (both ways) has virtually stopped because of the hassle and cost - most boats are either similar prices or more expensive in the EU and the cost of transport plus paying VAT means it is uneconomic.

If you want a boat in the UK buy one here. May restrict your choice.

I don't know if boats are covered .. but I do know that items I have wanted to send to UK - I have option to 'reclaim' the VAT paid in EU. Some items depending on VAT (PVN here) status of seller - can be sold excl Vat as long as item passes secure and sealed through Customs Free Zone ...

Best to ask a Customs Broker ..... IN the land you will buy .... then check UK import rules.

That only applies to new products, not used boats on which VAT has already been paid. You do not need a customs broker for the import as it is very straightforward for an individual boat. Just call the HMRC leisure boats unit in Portsmouth who will advise what you need to do. You can, of course employ a broker if you don't want to DIY but it really is not necessary.

I am helping somebody doing just that at the moment, but only in talking through the options of getting the boat back. He already has the heads up from HMRC.

Fair enough ...

I am looking to move up a boat size ... but I already have a 'system' in place ... mmmmm less said about that the better.
