I live in Pafos, Cyprus, only a few hundred metres from the beach. I have always wanted to own a boat and living so close to the sea, I recently a bought a used Fletcher Arrowflyte. It came with a trailer and is fitted with a Yamaha 50hp outboard. The sale included 2 life jackets, large fuel tank and sundries. I picked it all up for 300 euros !! (250 pounds). Which I'm sure, even as a complete novice is a bargain. However....The Cypriot laws regarding owning and using a boat are very complicated. For instance boat trailers must be registered with the dept of Transport, much like a car and must have its own No. plates. All boats over 2.4 mtrs in length must be registered with the Ministry of Shipping (small vessels). And you require an "operators licence" for any vessel capable of 15 knots or more. I have looked into obtaining an Operators Licence, which is complicated. I would have to undertake a course at a local boat school, if I pass the theory and practical tests I can apply for the licence, accompanied with a doctors letter of physical fitness?, plus a copy of my "radio operators Licence". (you have to buy one of those before you can apply!) Basically, it's gonna cost an arm and a leg! and take several months.
As I said earlier, a licence to operate a small boat is only required if the boat is capable of more than 15 knots.
Therefore, I am considering selling the 50hp Yamaha outboard that came with the boat, and replacing it with a smaller hp motor, that would render the boat incapable of more than 15 knots. I only want to potter about and maybe do a little fishing. As I know nothing about outboard motors, and have no intention of using it as a "speed boat". Can anybody out there tell me what size horse power motor I should use on a Fletcher Arrowflyte to have a max speed of no more that 15 knots.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
