helm dash design Qs

thanks for the pointers and opinions,

yep, googled vdo ocean line, and that must be what I have or as you say they are very very close!
Pitty that the mech boost gauge is around 50quid and the identical (with slightly angular top ring and red needle for cars (again VDO again mechanical) can be found at 25quid... Pyrometers are more expensive (around 150quid each and not sure sensors are included)

Yes IVECO use VDO gauges, only kids on the block these days.

Please do not become confused over use of EGT gauges, nothing to do with exhaust system safety, all to do with understanding engine loading. Rarely seen in Europe, 70% of US built vessels have them. VDO do matching EGT gauge.

No match at all with VDO stuff, but Isspro do a real neat combined EGT or their turbocator, boost and pyro all in one.

your old SS switches are nice,
you have plenty of SS or Chrome items on the dash,
so you could use these old fashion toggle switches for the wipers and some other applications

agree with you on the Black vinyl upholstry,
looks nice with the black gauches and chrome items,
much better then wood vineer in this position (imho)

Thanks a lot LS!

didn't know of them, it's a perfect gauge, or it would if it had white dials and was 52mm or 85, but 76mm means it messes my layout. OK, slightly kidding, but indeed wont blend nicely with the rest of the gauges in there. I'll think about it, works out slightly more expensive than getting just the two VDO matching turbo gauges with their respective sensors, so obviously much better deal this combo! Doesn't mention sensor for pressure, so I hope it's a simple mechanical boost gauge in there.

Q: I can pick industrial cabling and good quality thermocoupler locally for a fraction of the cost (and be able to have spares or change them occasionaly). Is that ok, or should I always buy matching sensors for them?
I do remember having no probs with my car EGT bits, but I also do remember some F, E, whatever ratings for the thermocouples that define the rate they can handle and depict change (iirc, may be way off on that!)

Q2: don't happen to have any owners/user manual for my engines by any chance? Wouldn't mind getting an explanation of the warning lights and figuring out what's installed on my engine. Talking about IVECO AIFO 8061 SRM 33. Searching around I've only come across a PDF on the 8060SRM25 which is quite different to mine :(

cheers

PS. once my back is a bit better I should remove the turbos and may come back to you with more Qs...

yep, exactly :)

Although I do like the if it aint broken don't fix it moto, I cannot imagine why they wasted so much space just on the flipping wipers controls! I hope there's no massive potentiometer underneath and at least I'll redo the plate and have both next to each other with the potentiometers on a different smaller in dia knob :)

keep you posted

My JCL version of the Mystere 43 has the same wiper control arrangement.....a toggle switch to turn the wiper on/off and a massively oversized dial to adjust the speed. Personally I like this setup. It allows the helmsman to accurately controll the wiper speed and avoid that juddering, but I must admit it does seem a bit over engineered and takes up a huge amount of space.

From experience, it pays to have the controls for the wipers in the original position right next to the helmsman'd seat as my Mystere does tend to take a lot of spray over the large front windows.

Also, my boat has cream vinyl on the front 'dashboard,' which can cause a lot of glare in the screens............I'm planning to change this for a dark colour....is your black vinyl better for this?

Guys,

I never said that the placement is wrong or they don't perform right, just that they're TOO big and I'm sure a potentiometer doesn't have to be wasting so much space.
I'll try and rearrange them so that they fit one next to the other so I know which one I'm trimming at any moment...

Pete, yes black vinyl is perfect for the Med sun ;) minimum glare, I don't think I'd survive light beige like you and Alf have.
Only problems I had was on the night passages during the delivery trip that I had to move to the f/b as the angle of attack was bad and even with minimal lights on the salon I'd see fck all and was afraid of picking any pots...

BTW Pete, do you also have similar warning lights for your ivecos? care to explain what the ones I'm not so sure about do?

cheers

Hello virtuvas,

I have been following your great thread re the main work to your boat, but I only just saw this one re the dash.

Last year after engine replacement I renewed my cabin and flybridge instruments. I set it all out in Adobe Illustrator, had it printed onto clear film which I then stuck to alloy composit board. Here are some photos:

Wow,

that's very professional looking job, very well done sir!
I'll do the simple dash dials only (and possibly 8-10 warning bulbs) in 3mm alloy sheet and line it with vinyl for now. Of course if I could find a strong non flaky composite material strong enough and good for laser cutting, I'd use that and skip the vinyl but I'm afraid to foul and make a mess of it in the long run...

The toggle switches and all other lot is yet to be finalised (still thinking and adding controls to the list...), so for this summer it will be a bit messy on the right hand side. Next winter together with the f/b rebuilt I'll tackle the switches and may follow a similar approach to avoid the stickers and labelling blues ;)

cheers

Weather much better, rib hurts less, so dismantled the rest of the helm bits that I need to redo.

The slanted one where I'll fit the keys/stop buttons for the ivecos and the Cetrek autopilot control.
The horizontal one aft which will get the two wiper controllers one next to the other (they fit nicely!) and the rear part I'll built a extra elboard box (up to about where the VHF now lives) for my BMS and few more controllers (bilge/black water pumps, etc) That's going to be slightly narrower and wont interfere with helming

So it now looks like this:

There's a MASS of tangled wires in there, there's the nicely organised detroit related ones (that I cut and tape) and the rest that I'll have to spend a few days figuring out what does what...
Thinking of REMOVING completely the bunch that relate to the detroits. Any reason not to? Other than not finding the route and having problems pulling them about that is...

The Speich controllers is a beautifully engineered piece of kit from the 70ies:

Plan is to lasercut a new plate on which both boxes will be secured and probably swap the small indicator bulbs to leds since the red warning cover on the one is missing :(

Need to find vinyl that fits my design and start my woodwork ;)

cheers

V.

PS. no comments on the fake (hopefully!) croc/snake upholstery plz!

aha,
thats what I had in mind of what could be in there;
a old power / wire winding potentiometer,
so the button on top is not out of proportion with its function.
nice :-)

yep exactly, so now I have to handle this beauty with due respect and design a proper front plate for them. To tell you the truth I feel bad about replacing the small indicator bulb/assembly with a 5mm red led + resistor :(

cheers

They used to be off-white, with black writing and a slim black coned semi-circle for the black dial for the speed, moving from left to right in 180 degrees over the top (through 90 ).

Can't eplain those warning lights I'm afraid. My Ivecos engines use the original warning lights that were fitted with the old Perkins V8s, just in front of and behind the ignition keys to the right of the wheel. There is a light and buzzer for oil pressure and water temp, and water temp and oil/turbo pressure guages retro fitted into the main dash panel.

Like yours, no heaters were fitted as standard, but the previous owner changed this but they ar operated from then engineroom.

Good luck,

Pete

pete, OK thanks, hopefully will figure out the 3 that don't quite make sense to me...

Bart, I did finally buy two new nickel plated by the looks, smallish bulb assemblies for the indicators.

Still struggling with getting VDO OceanLine boost gauges, ppl seem to stock only 5 and 10bar oil pressure ones :(

Getting ready for my woodwork as I planned exactly where A/P keys etc fit.

HOWEVER, looking around the specialist shops here, turns out that I cannot get matching leatherette (how do you call this synthetic leather thing? I was calling it vinyl throughout this thread but apparently I'm wrong...)
New designs have more subtle "lines" in them and are definitely more matt as in dull not shiny.

That means that I:
  • either remove lining from an area I know I'll be replacing with other colour or whatever and reuse it (dodgy as 35yo synthetic wont easily stretch and fit on a new shape)
  • or replace all material around the helm (dodgier as that's more work than I'd like to embark)

Am I safe in assuming that I wont find 35yo leatherette _NEW_ now???

Anyone?

cheers

V.

PS. wonder if I should get a new thread just for this leatherette issue...

There is a Oldtimer car rebuilder here nearby,
he is very professional, has dome some very valuable cars,
If you like I will asc him, but then I would need a small sample ?
