this is my first sailing boat - I have had lots of dinghies, motor boats, kayaks etc, but this is a whole different ball game for me!!

re keel mechanism being same as 1987 catalina 22, its the same set up, except the handle is facing the other way - into the cockpit, not into the cabin. the handle is located just to the left of the hatch as you are stood in the cockpit looking at it...if that makes sense!

Anyway, my approach to maintaining failed parts on boats in simple. First question is why did it fail and what can I do to prevent this ever happening again.
Your case is simple and you have 2 options, keep the timber look but the increase the size or the profile to give more thickness at the point the old one failed and use a timber or timber treatment that will last longer.
The other alternative and the one I would advise is use aluminium or 316 grade stainless steel with a nylon 'L' or 'U' shaped runner strip inside.
You can purchase the "proper" profile in stainless or alloy or you can improvise an alloy one.
The nylon or other self lubricating material is important to avoid wearing out the thin strip on the hatch slide and also helps to cover the fixing screw heads.

thanks for nylon inside steel suggestion...hadnt considered ware without it...will go shopping on monday and see what I can find!...dont know if the old runners were original, but may have just failed due to age?...reckon hardwood runners may certainly outlive me....though my daughter may be putting similar posts on here one day if they fail in the future!!

Even hard wood will need protection from sun and rain or you will do it all again a lot sooner than planned.

thats true!...think it had a few years without too much maintenance before I go it! I plan to keep the maintenance up, so hopefully it should see me out!...

Welcome to the forum!
Do you have or can you borrow a pressure washer. Half an hour alongside a pontoon or jetty with water and electricity and a pressure washer will work wonders. Just remember to close all the hatches first and don't aim the jet straight at them or you may spend some time drying out the inside!

hi there!...thanks for the link re truro boat owners association...I will definately be joining up, sounds great!!...I have noticed the boats in the yard across the river and assumed it would be expensive to join!!...One thing I was wondering is if there would be room over there to take my boat out for the winter as it may be easier to carry out work on dry land?...I will make enquiries with the club when I join.

If you follow Thistle's suggestion about a power wash DON'T use it on the woodwork - you risk stripping out some of the softer grain, knocking out any plugs over screws, etc. There's much previous advice on this forum about cleaning wooden decks - take a look.
Having seen the pictures, I'd get the foresail off her and examined ASAP. It might just need a good clean, but there's a possibility of UV damage, and you wouldn't want it flying into shreds the first time you get a gust. You can see a lot with a careful eye, and if you've got doubts ask a local loft to take a look.

Bit of Deja Vu here. I am sure there was a post some time ago on this forum asking about an identical boat, if not the same one. And it was identified after a while. Might have been a couple of years ago? Possible the boat was around Wales? Anybody else remember?

hey there!...it may have been me!...I did post a similar question re its identity when I first got the boat back in february this year, but I put it into the classical forum and didnt get a lot of help - certainly nothing like the help I am recieving on this forum!! I hope it wasnt my post that you are refering too, as it wasnt identified when I asked back in feb, and I wonder if there may have been a post from the previous owner, who said when I got it that he had made enquiries in the past?...if it was that then the mystery would be solved!...right, time to start trolling through the "can you identify this boat" posts for the last few years on here then!!

hi there!...did go down there today, getting dark so no pics, but checked the mainsail...assuming that its the original, and I seem to remember the previous owner being unsure if it was too, it has the numbers 110 with a large letter P above the numbers. Hope this helps!

right....looked on here http://www.msogphotosite.com/PDF Page.html (main insignia file) and there are two options for the sail - either a Pepper, or a Petrel - neither of which I can find much about online!!!!! arghhhh!!!!!

well.......might have cracked it!...theres a boat called a "matilda 20", which was updated in the mid 1990's by a "pippin 20"...both look similar to mine, but they both have a drop keel rather than a keel that swings up like mine...think i'm getting somewhere though!!

From an old copy of PBO, your boat appears to be a Sprite, built by Pearson Bros of
Arundel. She first appeared in early 1976.
Dimensions are as follows:
LOA 20 ft
Beam 8 ft
Draft 2 ft plate up
Displacement 2000 lbs
Ballast 600 lbs of which 450 lbs is in the centre plate
Sail area 173 sq ft
