I wrote in this column some months ago about finding a publisher for my sailing autobiography "Hebridean diary of a Serial Sailor" and several members replied encouraging me to finish the project asking me to report back on progress.

I am relieved to say I found a local publisher based in my home town of Glasgow called Authorway.net and they helped me through the process of formatting and pricing.I could have attempted this myself but with over 120 images floating around my text of 120,000 words, wanted a professional look to the final project.I can recommend them if there are any other budding writers out there!

My autobiography is 10% philosophy, 20% of my life in the Scottish art scene, and 70% my sailing log of my yacht Papillon of Carden, which covers 33 years and well over 25000 miles sailing in these enchanted waters. Papillon of Carden is a Dufour Safari sloop, 27 foot in length, and has been in continuous commission since her purchase her in 1979. Most of this distance has been covered single handed. We published as an e book on Amazon as there were so many colour images that other platforms wouldn`t support such a file size.

When I first started keeping a log way back in 1979,I had no intention of reproducing what I had written, and I noticed one entry around 1990 which stated "why do I bother to write all this down, as nobody will ever read this stuff" little knowing that I would commit it to e book away in the distant future.Computers wern`t part of our society at that time!

I didnt want to give the link directly as it might break the forum rules as I am not supposed to use this for selling directly.
However I have a "unique name"....cully pettigrew.... in google and amazon...typing it in to amazon usually gets you to the right place .
Anyway bikedaft has done the job for me...thanks.
It is 10% philosophy,20% my life in the art business and 70% sailing so I hope the first two dont spoil the wet stuff!

Thank you for reading the diary.Could you please leave a review on Amazon (hopefully positive!) as the book has just been published and needs all the reviews it can get at this early stage.
Now as to Ardnabuie, it is a closely guarded secret which I am happy to share but dont tell everyone! If you look at Google Earth and scroll down the coast immediately south of Carsaig is a large shallow bay, which you will see is linked to Carsaig through two narrow channels. Do not try and enter through these channels as they are only suitable for very small craft. Access is safe and simple by entering at the bottom of the two channels . The tide is strong across the entrance on the flood and ebb which has the effect of dampening any swell coming from the south, but best avoided if there is any strong wind with a south component. I have just checked Google Earth and the position is lat 56° 1'10.27"N long 5°39'31.98"W The bay is a good size and is well sheltered from any wind other than with a southerly component but be prepared to anchor in shallow water as the rise and fall in the Sound of Jura is only 6 feet springs. One of the best secret anchorages in this area!I will try and post an image but am not sure if this blog supports this.
I hope this info will be of use but please keep it a secret!

New images of Papillon of Carden`s rescue at Loch Scresort, Rhum last July by Mallaig lifeboat, Henry Alston Hewitt at http://www.flickr.com/photos/98207267@N03/with thanks to Bruce`s son of Mikoko, Dunstaffnage. A full account of this rescue in included in the Hebridean Diary, and I may add these images in due course. This is one advantage of an electronic book v printed. You are able to make additions and changes although not sure if my editor publisher agrees!

Thanks Bikedaft
Prepared to correct any factual mistakes if you would let me know. Sometimes difficult to get things right especially with 120000 words and 107 images with titles.. That is the beauty of an e book! It can be edited unlike paper.
Please let me know if there are any glaring errors or misspelling of places which you think should be corrected and would be grateful if you would leave a review on Amazon.

This may just be away too ambitious at present but I am now thinking of doing an audio book of the Hebridean Diary. I have just bought a Kindle Fire and downloaded my book to check it out.I was surprised to find it had an audio version built in but the voice was only a female computer simulated version. It pronounced the word dingy as dinjay and sounded quite funny! My own voice is not too bad and I immediately thought I could do better but when I investigated further, the complexities of speaking clearly into a mike with no background interference sounded daunting.
Amazon have an audio website but this is only available to US citizens.
Anyone with experience of audio books and how to economically set this up.A good mike can cost over £100 just for starters.

have you thought of approaching your local radio station and see if they will 'hire' you some studio time to record it as a file

That is a thought.....don`t know if they would spare me the time necessary as the book is long at 120,000 words so could take some considerable studio time.Thought it would be possible to use my boat as studio and I would get the sound of gulls and waves in the background for free!
I have checked out Amazon and they have a program for Kindle users but it is only available in the USA. I think to obtain a professional finish, it will be necessary to invest in a good mike....not sure if I want to go to all these lengths and was hoping to buy a cheap mike and use my laptop but to be marketable, it will have to sound professional.Nothing is gained without effort... a lot of effort!`
Thanks for the idea anyhow
