Heating vs Power: thoughts

Ach ye southern softies. We hadna ony heat at a' when we had the boat up to Tarbert in the October school holidays wi the kids. They had grand fun makin' slides in the frost on the pontoons. Jist pit some mair clothes on or get a nice wee gurl fur a cuddle.

You can get a CO detector for less than £20. I know that's a fair bit in some circumstances but you're probably just as likely to be saved by that as by a life jacket I reckon. Tesco's and the like do them but make sure you get one with at least a five or six year life (it's the sensor itself that has the life, not the battery). I was recommended the Kiddie make by the local fire brigade - it's just the name of the Company, not a range for Kiddies. Completely self-contained and will definitely wake you up from any survivable alcohol-induced comatose state.

Aah, fond memories of mine. It was my first boat - Jalina was her name.

She had two massive wheelchair batteries, so big I couldn't haul them down the pontoon without a break every 10m. I ended up getting rid of them and putting a single 55ah in there since it was easier to carry home to charge /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Haha. Yes, but taking a weekend break is one thing, but living on a boat with no heating, full time, is another. It would get quite tedious I think, especially when I get wet sailing and want to go and warm up/dry off.

A wee girl for a cuddle isn't a bad idea, but it's quite difficult to find one that's willing to spend that much time on a 21ft boat. Maybe I could have a shore based collection and rotate them in a 4 day watch system? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

From all the replies so far, I think I'm settled on a solar cell and Tilley lamp. The problem now, is getting enough for my eber D2, to fund said bits /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Nathan. I struggle iwth these issues too. I bought a second hand a charcoal heater which I fitted to my 23 footer a few weeks ago. It is fantastic. Total cost was about 150 - much less than I guess your ebe will sell for; dry heat = dry socks and no condensation and having a boat with a coal bunker is sure to lure a mermaid or two in...Another option which I ran for the last two years was 'black cat' heater which ran well off camping gas, but did make things damp. It cost about 25 plus small gas cartridges. So far as power goes I have an origo too, a battery powered depth guage and a small hand held gps. Power consumption is minimal. Its only in the last 30 yrs that sail boats have had power. Get a copy of Mcmullen's 'Down Channel.' The prioe of the book will be recovered in inspiration and realisation that power need not be a huge issue.
