Heating etiquette

Putting aside the word "tell" which is at least untactful, I'm surprised at the response of many of the answers you have received. Especially at this time of year, marinas are quiet and tranquil places, I have a lot of sympathy for the 'visitor' who has paid his money and deserves a peaceful nights sleep.
I'm with the member who suggested buying a Delongi electric radiator, that's what we have done.
On a similar topic this year I've installed a switchable separate water outlet for my a/c on the other side so I can divert the water noise if I have sleeping neighbours (not had sleeping neighbours on both sides yet so haven't faced that dilemma!!)

I feel happier if I have happy neighbours and am prepared to throw a little cash to achieve it.

Just for a little balance on this issue.

My boat is aft cabin, boat next to me is aft cockpit and he sleeps in the fwd cabin, his heater exaust exits on transom, prevailing wind puts me down wind of him.

He runs his heater all night on most visits, it is a large unit and when it modulates it roars like a jumbo jet, it also gives off fumes at the same stage, these find their way into my sleeping cabin.

Would previous comments apply in this case?

Im sure Gary or George dont know they have noisey systems, sleep up front then?

Surprised at you Paul.

Gary has now gone, George is deaf! one of the main benefits of my type of boat is the aft cabin, so your suggestion is about as sensible as me telling you to sleep in your cockpit.

Hi Peter didnt realise Gary had gone, he had me looking for another boat for him, so who is next to you now? as you know I dont visit your marina much these days, oh how about turning your boat around then so your away from his outlet.

Will you be off next year now then?

Oh Princess 410 for sale.

George is the offender, don't want to upset him by complaining, he does not come that often anyway, my post was just to put the other side to the OPs question.

Not allowed [TERMS AND CONDITIONS], or practical to moor stern in, due to angle of banking.

All been well be gone in Spring.

Good luck with your sale, you have chosen a bad time.

We are new to boating and I must admit we have wondered what is, and what isn't acceptable when it comes to running the heating system in our marina. I consider our heating to be pretty quiet, our neighbour who is also new to boating runs his system which is noisier than ours. Does this really bother me ? Not really. I consider his comfort to be more important than a little noise that can not really be heard over SWMO's snoring ! I think the key is a little respect and consideration for each others needs.

Heater silencers

If the noise of the heater running is worrying anyone we have found that with the addition of an exhaust silencer (or 2 if you wish) and an air intake silencer our Eber D1Lc is whisper quiet, once through the initial full heat burn (which is very quiet anyway)and it drops to the lower heating setting, you are hard pressed to hear it thereafter.

I sometimes think it's turned itself off when walking down the pontoon, it's not until I put my hand by the skin fitting I realise it's still on!, and yes I do have perfect hearing.

I agree, but you have to draw some line somewhere here - as 25ft boat with one cabin (and most of that has only 6mm of grp as insulation), no shore power and absolutely nowhere to store a radiator.....there are times when I will run it.

Generally marinas are less tranquil than anchorages - at which point many of those who have options will run 'something' (generator + rads or eber) and the noise will carry across the water far more than in a marina.

Absolutely and totally agree your last sentence - but there is also a degree of acceptance on the other side as well.

fwiw I'm not marina based and probably run the eber 4 times a year on average - but would still hate it to upset others.

We have little choice but to run the Webasto having a small boat there isnt room to be lugging around oil fille radiators as well. Our heater is fitted with a silencer and isnt an intrusive noise. Others in our marina have far louder heaters but given that we all want to keep warm during the colder months it isnt a problem. You learn to live with the noise and we certainly wouldnt approach someone and ask them to turn off their heating.

So in Marina, cold October night, visitor yacht turns up next door.1800hrs he tells me to turn my heating off(normal eberspluter)as he doesn't like the noise.without being too rude what would you do,regards mm1.

If he TOLD me to turn it off, I'd just tell him to feck off.

If he asked, that'd be a different story. I wouldn't turn it off if it was the only way to keep warm, but i'd see if there was a way to accommodate him. If he was a nice person, i might even turn the boat around.

As for Capsco's post, i'd have a word with him and see if something could be worked out. Politely mentioning that his heating was noisy shouldn't cause offence. Perhaps you could swap berths with him.

Would be interested in finding out what sort of silencer you fitted, perhaps with pictures......

so just to clarify things, the chap waited until i came uptop with my cup of tea stuck his head out of his canopy & shouted oi ! ,no preamble or fore play just oi can you turn your heating off ,i said yes it has an on/off switch, not sure why he was upset but we were very warm all night,my point is why are some people so rude nowadays if he had approached things a little better i of course would have accomadated his concerns, regards mm1

Personally... after midnight any sound that travels should be avoided. If in a marina run an electric fan heater/radiator after midnight.

If someone asked me to turn mine off at 6pm I'd just laugh at them.

In that case, i'd have told him to feck off. I'm a very nice person (really) and often go out of my way to help people. People who are rude like that instantly pi55 me right off. I'd have left it on all night, if it had a "make more noise and pi55 the rude man in the next boat off" mode, i'd have turned that on too :D

I spose the answer should have been: "Terribly sorry, old chap, I can't hear a word you say. I've got the eberspacher on, you see."

I am somewhat surprised by some of the advice of aggression which will just wreck a great weekend.

Far better to wait for dark and take a slash in his fresh water filler, smile and wave him off.

Then keep your eye on scuttleburks for a week or two, sooner or later someone will moan about their water having a unusual smell/taste ;)

Any awkward sods that are reading this, think about it , did you really think you had got one over on a stinker by being so rude about generator/heater noise /smoke :D

Another DAKA troll
You cant be sure , can you ;)
Best be nice to stinkers in future.....

:D:D

Dear daka,

As soon as you start, the boat occupant will hear what you are doing & pop up with a phone/ camera to take a video & call the Police. Or worse still, post it on U-tube. Enjoy your time in court/ the public eye.

I have stayed in many different marinas and have never found a heater to be too noisy but do find that boats leaving and entering through out the night are more likely to be heard espesially the ones with the straight through exhausts, was in Dover on the pontoon near the lifeboat last year and the fishing boat in front of me started his engines and left them running for well over half an hour at 3 am and there were many complaints from people he woke up, why not just start up and go?
