So in Marina,cold October night,visitor yacht turns up next door.1800hrs he tells me to turn my heating off(normal eberspluter)as he doesn't like the noise.without being too rude what would you do,regards mm1.
 
Politely decline - not at all unreasonable to have heating on when it is cold. Different matter if you are burning his gelcoat or melting fenders - that would warrant doing something!!
 
If were rafted and my exhaust is just about to pop his fender's I'd switch the electric fan heater on. otherwise i'd tell him to Bu**ER OFF.

Who the Donald duck does he think he is to tell you to turn your heating off. If anyone were to tell me what I should do on my yacht I would, in no uncertain terms, tell them where to go and then I might well forget to turn off my cockpit speakers and relax to some soothing Led Zeppelin or Jimmy Hendrix

If they were to ask me, I might be a bit more accommodating, but at 6pm in October I would still want my heating on if I had had a cold days sail.

You could say you are sorry but your partner is cold, and when she's cold she's not in a good mood, so while you appreciate that your heater might be a little annoying, it's only 6pm and you'd rather keep your partner happy than your neighbour.
 
If he was a visiting boat i would tell him to moor somewhere else if he does not like the alleged noise. How much noise does your system make as i have never had a problem with someone else's heating system being on.

this is a difficult one because no-one wants to seem unreasonable.

however, unless you have a realistic alternative, there's not a lot that you can do.

unlike generators heaters are generally an accepted inconvenience - but as most people don't run them unless they need them I can see little point in complaining.
 
Assasin,it's a normal ebersplutter & I think quieter than many others I have heard.got the impression a Marina berth was rather novel for him. To everyone else you show remarkable restraint!!,good night & keep warm / we are!! Mm1.
 
Aggression begets aggression. So go the opposite way;

The best way is to spin a story about your wife recovering from a VERY serious operation & needs to be kept warm, but you also felt that she should enjoy what little time she has left & that is why you are boating so late in the season with an invalid.:D

Make him feel like the real Bar steward he is . . . :D
 
I fitted Eberspacher at huge expense great at sea in the winter when you need some heat .

But at night I am a light sleeper, its like having a westland helicopter in the cabin, plus i still have not yet learned how to set it for more than an hour.

However all is saved, I bought two Delonhi oil filled electric heaters locally about 15" long 15 high and 8 wide cost about £40 each silent and very effective if you are on shore power.
 
Just for a little balance on this issue.

My boat is aft cabin, boat next to me is aft cockpit and he sleeps in the fwd cabin, his heater exaust exits on transom, prevailing wind puts me down wind of him.

He runs his heater all night on most visits, it is a large unit and when it modulates it roars like a jumbo jet, it also gives off fumes at the same stage, these find their way into my sleeping cabin.

Would previous comments apply in this case?
