Having just read the article [it takes a long time to get to the Southern Hemisphere] I would take one to sea without a worry. In fact, I think that I would trade in my beloved old gaff ketch for one if they were available here. If I were buying one from Martin, [ie new] I would specify a small, self draining cockpit footwell and a deck level bridgedeck at the companionway. If I were buying one secondhand I would be looking for those features or a boat which I could modify to incorporate them easily.
Peter.

There is an owners association for Martin Heard boats "Gaffers and Luggers Association". Send me a PM for details. I have a Heard 23 and have sailed a Heard 28 in which we survived a F8 squall. Very stable boat, and very fast when fitted with the larger rig option.
