Headroom...

Bavarias are a little out of my price range unfortunately...

I've found remarkably few 25 - 33 footers which sport 6' 2" plus headroom. I know some of the Bristol Channel cutters had plenty but it isn't something searchable on any of the online forums I look at. In fact it is often left off most of the descriptions, even the ones on which it is a field.

Could anyone recommend other makes or models which sport plenty of headroom? My budget would be more along the lines of 70's and 80's yachts than very modern ones. Whilst I've posted this in liveaboard I wouldn't be a full time liveaboard, think more escaping the commute for a couple of days a week..

Try a Stag 28. At 6'2" you'll have headroom to spare in the saloon. You'll have to stoop in the forward cabin but you'll spend most of your time in there horizontal! The Stag's sail pretty well too.

There is a huge choice of 30-35 footers from that era with full standing headroom, many of them available for around £30k - Moody 30 and 33, assorted Westerlys, Countess just some of those popular with liveaboards - and indeed any cruising sailor. Headroom (and space in general) is only a problem with older, narrower low freeboard designs - many of which at that length are much cheaper - partly because of the lack of space. Not sure why you mention Pilot cutters. Very few are less than 40' - and there are very few at all on the market. There are a few modern boats in the style such as Heard cutters and Crabber Pilots, and these do generally have full headroom if you like that style of boat.

I mentioned the cutter because it is listed as having 6'6" headroom in a 27' hull....

Most of the Moodys, Westerleys etc you mention seem to be listed as 6' or 6'1", I am 6'2" in my socks hence was asking about designs with lots of headroom.... Ideally enough to stand up straight without balding the top of my head!

Sorry about the mixed metaphor, but you are splitting hairs there. I am slightly taller at 6'3" and in practice that amount of headroom is "full" - it is when you drop down to about 5'8" that it becomes difficult as the stoop is at its most uncomfortable for tall people.

Nicholson 26 I think has a few inches over 6 feet, not many come up for sale...
