I have lost my little pointer sometime during the winter.
My hawk is a combined wind indicator VHF aerial. Do I have to replace the whole gubbins or can I just buy a new pointer and slip it on ?

Yes, you can buy the wind indicator separate from the vhf aerial, try Hawk or Vitronix.

One tip: on my boat, in strong winds, the windex would fly to the top of the aerial (which has a cap to keep it in place), the aerial would bend with the weight and it was useless.

To fix, I broke open an old three pin mains plug and winkled out the brass set screw fittings used to trap the neutral and earth lines. The set screw fittings slide nicely onto the aerial, one below and the other above the windex, keeping it neatly trapped in place.

If you are able, separate the aerial from the Hawk as the former will shake the latter to pieces

I concur I lost the aerial after sailing in about F5/6 don't recommend use a separate windex. Good idea about using plug I probably did not restrict movement of wind arrow which allows it to slid up and whip aerial breaking contact.

[/ QUOTE ]Mine did that once on a previous boat. On careful examination, I found that I'd put it together incorrectly. From memory (on the Hawk Vtronix) the clips that determine the angle that the fixed tell tales sit at, should also sit OVER the top lip of the revolving windex. Its not obvious when you look at it at first, but it does stop the whirly bit sliding up the antenna.
