Havengore Bridge: Closed to marine traffic

During this month’s maintenance inspection, our contractor identified a fault with the hydraulic mechanism of the bridge. The fault is preventing the bridge from closing fully after lifting and therefore, compromises the maintenance of the roadway.

The remedial work will be to replace the valve block and our contractor is currently sourcing the replacement component. When we receive an update on the availability of the part, we will be able to estimate downtime. We apologise for the inconvenience that this will cause but are working to resolve the problem as soon as possible.

Quite right, I shouldn't have suggested that, so in the spirit of Christmas I have deleted it. And I hope the bridge staff enjoy their Christmas break :encouragement:

Shame that the Havengore doesn't breakdown whilst open and unable to close - I'm sure quicker remedial work would ensue to a higher effect. I was affected during the last breakdown over the summer bank holiday, was circling around on the Thames side after requesting it to raise, and they were unable to do so. Missed the high point of tide to 'escape' back over the Maplin and out to deeper water. We had to take to anchor and the following night passage the long way around - what should have been a 15 minute journey through and back to pontoon, ended up taking 8 hours (not including the afternoon/evening/night until high tide).

In Holland this summer we encountered a few non working bridges, either due to unusual weather or, in Gouda, by being hit by a ship. In most cases these were fixed overnight or in a few days. Havengore's problems seem to have been going on for years. Are foreigners better engineers than us?

Personally I think they should remove the hanging bar when the bridge is inoperative. It won't help yachties much, but smaller, lower boats could at least still use the route, which is, after all, a public right of way, when the range is not in use.

Turns out they will indeed enjoy the break although perhaps not the loss of overtime. Latest from Qinetic is that their contractor is sourcing a replacement part but won't be back on site until the 31st......
Or maybe none of them wanted to work over Christmas anyway.
