Have you used Shiply.com to move biggish stuff around and how did it go? I notice that if you leave it a day or two the prices get quite good. How's the service?

It varies enormously as Shiply is just acting as go-between. The level and quality of service is down to the individual carrier, which covers a very broad scale from brilliant to terrible.

I had an MVHR unit shipped from England to the Highlands, about 4ft square by 18" high, a 2 man lift.

They guy that delivered it came in a plain white van, with every square inch of space used with stuff stacked in an order that must have taken some working out, even the passenger seat and footwell were full of stuff.

But it arrived on time and undamaged so that is how his business model works, fill every bit of available space and make a run.

Other attempts and I got no sensible bids, so it is very variable.

I used it to move a 600cc motorbike that I had left in the marina car park for way too many years. Struggled to push it then, even after copious amounts of penetrating oil on the chain.

First response on Shiply was from sbdy local who had a motorbike trailer with both front wheel and handlebar clamps. He emailed good photos of the trailer in advance. I did get other responses over the next few days but glad I went with the first. The driver was so useful helping to push the bike at pickup and drop off points and he even thought about locking the front brake on.

Very professional but as the other posters have said, it's up to you who you choose and there are all sorts who respond.

First payment is to Shiply with the rest to the driver on the day.

I've used it for furniture several times, a car once and heavy car parts many times. I've learned to wait a day before replying to the quotes - two reasons, one is that they tend to sharpen their pencils and requote if they really want the job, and second to get a feel for the communication. Some speak little English so you need to allow for that. I've had several where I wondered what I was letting myself in for, but they've all done exactly what they were meant to. Some exceptional. One checked over a car I was buying on the understanding that I'd still pay him if he told me it was a pup and I didn't complete the purchase. Another collected a pair of still joined Land Rover gearboxes in the boot of a tiny hatchback and singlehandedly lifted them out and through onto my bench - I use a crane...

So would you say that the feedback given to the guys is worth reading or is it really a case of making your own judgements.

I had a boat moved using shipley this year

The biggest benefit was the speed of availability however the boat was damaged en-route

Ratchet straps flapped in the wind against the hull damaging the gelcoat and he ripped a cleat off on the centre of the boat ( one that was mounted on wooden base on the toerail )

It's just your luck really. That mover had lots and lots of good feedback but I wouldn't use again.
