No heating. The temperature was taken in my lounge. I had the patio doors open as well. My house faces due south and was sheltered from the north wind

Exactly, when I left W. Mersea at 1145 today it was 16C, and hasn't been above 17 in Rowhedge all afternoon

It was fairly warm in the garden this morning, but about fifty degrees south of what I need for wearing shorts. It's all very well for off-duty postmen-cum-sailors, but for me cold = pain and I am about to start my annual period of hibernation. On Tuesday last week I was sailing off Pye End in my short sleeves, which is quite close to nudity for me, but it looks as if it will be a while before I can strip again on the boat.

Stopping briefly for a last view of the Stour yesterday before my long journey home (in a warm car) I was hailed by a passer-by with the words ‘Bit cold for shorts ain’t it, guv?’. Politely ignoring a familiarity unjustified by prior acquaintance I replied by referring to postmen - with which he agreed. I wear shorts as long as I can and think the critical issue is shapeliness of leg. On that account I have no qualms - but perhaps I should think more of the impact of veins, and of overall body conformation.

How about keeping the shorts going coupled with man tights. Don't other sports have this combination ?

It's a hard life being a wimp. I spent many of my school days in shorts, thick woollen things that left the inside of one's thighs sore. Also, I am not so vain as to want the world to admire my knees. Being poikilothermic myself, clothes are a means of thermoregulation and protecting one's privacy. There are a few occasions some years when shorts are merely a convenient alternative to nudity.

Got mine on but then I am in Cyprus for the next six weeks. Boats on the hard at a Suffolk yacht Harbour and looking at the weather I am rather glad shes not out on her mooring.
