Have I got a yacht or a boat?

It's all in the mind, although confusion reigns because "yacht" is one of those nouns that declines in the English language:

I have a beautiful yacht
You have a nice boat
He/She has an old tub

and in the plural:
We have a bleedin' liability

Hope this helps

[ QUOTE ]
Noun 1. yacht - an expensive vessel propelled by sail or power and used for cruising or racing

[/ QUOTE ]

So I guess it depends on the term expensive and vessel

[ QUOTE ]
Noun 1. vessel - a tube in which a body fluid circulates
Noun 2. vessel - a craft designed for water transportation
Noun 3. vessel - an object used as a container (especially for liquids)

[/ QUOTE ]

[ QUOTE ]
Adj 1. expensive - high in price or charging high prices; "expensive clothes"; "an expensive shop"

[/ QUOTE ]

That clears that up then ....

When does a boat become a yacht?

[/ QUOTE ]

Errm - around about the time the owner starts sailing in blazer, cravat, and peaked cap with gold braid

I would have thought that sails would have been part of the description for a yacht

BUT

When does a Mobo become a super-yacht?

On the other side of the Atlantic, where this Limey is right now, a yacht is anything without sails (!). A boat with sails is, hold tight - a 'sail-boat.'

Sail boaters call motor boats "stink-pots". Motor boaters call sail-boats "blow-boats". Neither calls the other by nice names. But...are sail boaters "stink-potters" when they are motoring? (which they do most of the time). So I wondered whether they are "stink-pot-blow-boaters?"

If it's less than 30ft, a craft. less than 50ft a boat more than 50ft, now you're talking.

The sizes seem to go up over time. Years ago I mentioned a small yacht I had seen (something like a Vancouver 28), and was told "It has to be over 30 feet to called a yacht" Another 50 years and they will have to be 80 feet plus to qualify!
I also remember being given a definition along the lines of "If it is open it is a dinghy, if it has sails and a fully enclosed cabin it is a yacht"

Dunno.

A boat is something you can haul onboard a ship. The exception being submarines. Diesel-electrics are "boats" and the nukes are "ships".
