Haslar Marina - Good, bad or Ugly?

Take a look at Royal Clarence Marina - much smaller and friendlier and the island (Rat Island) in front means very little swell or wash even in the worst weather where Haslar I found very rolly - the wave breaks may as well not be there for the outer pontoons. RCM has good showers and heads and is very quiet and with excellent staff and is cheaper than the rest. The only down side is that there is nothing there on shore - no bar, no club etc - but you're only 2 minutes from cafes and pubs if you want a drink or food

I would agree with this - although RCM has a bit of a walk to showers and shops/pubs etc, it is much quiet now that Clipper have moved, if you like that, and I believe much cheaper than Haslar? RCM gives you TransEurope membership discounts as well.

A tad more than a 'bit of a walk'. It's bleeding miles to anywhere, ablutions, shops, pub, parking. That's why it's cheaper.

Unfortunately they are rather coy about their prices on the website, suppose one can always give them a call.

Last week I accepted MDL invitation to ask for a quote, the original quote was quite attractive until it turned out they had overlooked the information I had supplied and used the information I had given them about 10 years ago :(

Little Grebe,

don't forget the bloody awful traffic on and off Gosport; Twister Ken says he has some magic route avoiding it but he won't let on, I reckon he's Tomorrow's World's earlier version of the Stig, with some sort of rocket backpack !

Gosport is a pretty dreadful place and I wouldn't relish the idea of strolling around at night.

How about Sparkes marina in Chichester ? Funnily enough in over 40 years sailing in the harbour I've never been there since it was built, but should have plenty of depth ~ No idea of prices or facilities as I always go straight past, but last time I went there by land there were no staff anywhere I could see, though the pontoons etc look spiffing.

Traffic on and off Hayling Island at peak times - especially sunny Sundays when Kevin in his Subaru fancies a pose with his jetski - can be a right pain, but unlike Gosport at least there's decent scenery to look at which doesn't hurt the eyes.

Little Grebe is a man of taste and distinction and is acquiring a sister ship (albeit shinier) to my own fine vessel. Therefore, when the time comes, I shall induct him into the distinguished brotherhood of those who get to Gosport without going to Gosport.

And yes, B pontoon is fine, just not quite as fine as A pontoon.

One of the 'features' of living some distance from the Solent is that delaying setting off so that the rush hour delays on the M25 on a Friday afternoon have cleared means that the local traffic around Gosport isn't an issue.

I have kept boats at Northey marina in the past but the tidal limitations and having to walk to the mainland for a pub is putting me off.

:encouragement:

Sadly the empty spaces on A pontoon had been taken when I spoke to Rachael

I've done the walk from Northney marina to the club, Ship Inn or ( slightly less touristy ) Royal Oak many a time, I'd say it's fine in good weather; but there are lots of taxi firms in Havant keen for your business.

I must admit I don't know any nice pubs near Sparkes; years ago there used to be ' The Buccaneer ' which resembled the space bar scene in Star Wars, and anyone without a broadsword was underdressed; much like the pubs in Gosport, I still remember the place by the ferry offering ' Ark Royal burgers '...:)

If leaving Gosport go via Haslar, over the bridge, along Stokes Bay, Lee on Solent, enjoy the beautiful scenery!
Gosport is fine. Just be as careful as you would anywhere else.
If coming in, go via Lidl. New Aldi coming soon by Gosport Boat Yard.
Lots to recommend!

Dear oh dear, what a big girls blouse we are. Maybe 40 years ago but today it's no different to any other town. Man up, you wimp.

A, You don't know me,

B, I've been there a lot more recently than that,

C, You're called Doris.

Gosport isn't as bad as Cosham, Somerstown or Leigh Park, but I still wouldn't exactly take a first date there; by the sound of it you would !

I'm sat in Haslar at the moment, ate in the Castle on Friday night and braved the town yesterday with no fears for my safety. It's fine here these days and better than many other places (I also met up with friends from Somerstown yesterday and survived that too but they now live in Southsea so have probably been domesticated and I was born in Stamshaw so I'm probably not a wimp! :)). The Gosport Ferry gives easy access to everything in Pompey if you want to expand your horizons. The marina is one of the best in the Solent and access 2nd to none - the direction of wind and tide cause no more problems than anywhere else.
