Haslar Marina - Good, bad or Ugly?

I too find Seven Spades logic difficult to understand. Wherever you go one presumes you have to come back, and on his return from his spinnaker run to Chi he would have been very fortune if the presumably westerly wind suddenly swung round 180 degrees to the East! As for the tides, the're always going to be favourable and unfavourable for six hours a day wherever you start from and one chooses one's departure time and/or destination accordingly.

The one point I would agree with is the vast choice of restaurants within walking distance of Ocean Village and we often spend a night there to take advantage of this; our favourites being Charlie Chan's and Kuti's. There are few decent eating places in Gosport, but the New Bengal is a great Indian and the pizzas in Bobby's are also excellent. As already stated, the restaurants in the marina at Haslar are also pretty good, as is the Boathouse at Premier.

Well it is simple. If you are in ocean Village your route will be L shaped wherever you are going. Consequently you are guaranteed a good point of sail. I spent 5 years in Haslar and if you go down on a Friday evening and you want to get going west it can be a nightmare as usually the wind is from the southwest and you have to tack towards Ryde then back towards Gilkicker and even if you have a small it of tide against you it can take hours just to get to Cowes so you often have to put on your engine if you are short if time. I find that in Ocean village I am in effect in the middle of the Solent and with the wind from the south west going down Southampton water is on a single tack, and it is such a lovely start to the day. Returning in the evening we usually get a nice sale with the wind on the beam, (as it happens going back to Haslar usually results in a nice sail) but the journey up Southampton Water is used to pack everything up so that once we arrive at our berth we are ready to go.

Don't get me wrong I liked Haslar as a Marina, but I did not like the A32, the difficulty in parking, the poor showers, the poor choice of restaurants and dicing with the ferries when leaving Portsmouth Harbour when the inshore route was unusable.

With MDL there is freedom berthing which is brilliant and I think MDL have a brilliant attitude towards their berth holders. I also like Passport Escalles which MDL is also a member I also get 30% off services and fuel at cost. Overall the MDL package is really hard to beat. I don't like Chichester because of the access restrictions, if I was retired then I would consider it but as I often go out on a Friday evening and return Sunday afternoon I want all tide access.

Andy, I live in Gosport and completely disagree with you. Agreed traffic can be a problem during busy periods. However, Gosport has a surprisingly large number of parks and green open spaces. With Clarence Yard nearly complete and the old Crewsaver warehouse gone to be replaced with Aldi in the next month or so the waterfront area is developing nicely. The town has seen major change as the Royal Navy slowly pulled out over the last 20 years and has a bright future ahead. For yachties everything you need is in one location.

I have been offered a spot on B pontoon, this should be fine?

I am also on B - very peaceful and no wash to speak of. We have been there for a year and are very happy the staff are amazing. Pm me when you arrive on B.

You may also want to do the Scuttlebutt run in September to Cherbourg - great fun.

As for the comments regarding Gosport its a safe place period. We have never had a moments worry in two years and we eat out often. We moved down here 2 years ago and have never regretted it. The council works harder than our previous one, the streets are swept so often I think it may cause them to wear prematurely. They even have people picking up litter on Sunday's!

We spent several very good years in Haslar and can recommend it. Do ask the management which pontoon they have most of the charter boats on. some of the charterers are less than expert at close quarters manoeuvring and it might be good to avoid them. As has been mentioned the higher letter pontoons get more wash so somewhere in between was ideal for me

Sorry, just one more question - how much should I budget for shore power? (nothing special just battery charger and the like) Electricity was included in my normal berth feed so didn't have to take this into consideration.

I would anticipate a total bill of less than £30 per quarter. It will, of course, depend if you use any leccy for heating in the winter months.

I thought clipper where at Premier unless they have done a raid round the corner just for the showers
But I don't see why as the ones at haslar ain't that good

I reckon about the same on average throughout the year, that's charger on whenever in the berth, a few weeks low wattage heating and dehumidifier in the colder months and occasional weekends on board with heating etc.

I don't understand the comment regarding showers. These were a nightmare when I was at Premier on any decent day at the weekend;there were only five men's showers and the queue could be right down the stairs. They used to bring in Portacabins for the summer, these were tiny, had just one small hook to hang everything on, and ran out of hot water very quickly. However things might have improved in the couple of years since I left.

Showers at Haslar are currently being refurbished, there's lots of them, two shower blocks and more on the lightship, and I have rarely had to wait.

On a different issue, there seems to be lots of Forumites on B Pontoon at Haslar; I'm Blujay on B 12 where are the rest of you?

I assume you mean smoke and soot - no problem I can recall and certainly a lot less than the cr*p you get at Swanwick from the motorway and local roads.

Yes, that's it.

I find the effect quite noticeable at Hamble Point - presumably because it is downwind of the refinery, shipping, etc.

Not sure what D&R aimed to achieve with the new website as it doesn't seem to provide any useful information!
