Haslar Marina and Portsmouth Harbour

I kept my boat before last and the one before that opposite in Fort Blockhouse. Whereas access to the Solent was just great, especially for the sailing boat, getting into and out of Gosport was a royal PITA. I learnt to hate that journey to the point I was using the boat less and less.

But you visit your boat not Gosport. The Lightship, Hardy's, The Castle, New Bengal all good places to eat for those who can't be bothered getting the 3 min ferry to Gunwharf...I've yet to get to the Chinese (all you can eat) place near the ferry.....nor the infamous so-called nightclub, "Emma's"....!

Gosport is not a place you would visit out of choice.

Hmmmmm. That's a bit harsh. My dad lived there for about 30 years before he died and I visited him often. I have variously lived in the middle of London, Manchester and Edinburgh so its not my sort of place. However it is a genuinely friendly place and obviously the access to the harbour is great. After he died I sorted out all his stuff and have to say that the neighbours, estate agents, funeral people, solicitors, flower shop people etc were all incredibly friendly and pleasant to deal with.

Cheap housing too! It obviously suffers from bad transport links which is why I imagine it is a backwater.

We have been at Haslar for quite a few years having moved there after starting at Wicor for a year with our first boat. Like all marinas it has it's good and bad points :
Good points:
1 Friendly helpful staff as mentioned ; also various helpful local services from live aboard residents plus friendly bertholders and own yacht club which does rallies etc if company need for trips;
2 all states access subject to dredging and close to harbour mouth so no long motor down harbour or locks to get stuck in unlike port Solent and Chichester
3 good helpful chandlers at Arthur's and you boat within walking distance;
4 rigger X westerly XW on site,
5 various local eateries as highlighted - worth the walk to boathouse at next marinafor food though as onsite ones somewhat uninspired in choice and quality;
6 can invariably park in bertholders car park;
7 toilet block on pontoon and A block block recently upgraded;
8 wifi tends to work if you berth close enough to aerials
9 boatshow tickets and stand at SBS;
10 Gosport boatyard nearby and will collect and return
1 1 many local supermarkets eg morrisons and Asia plus budget ones lidl and aldi on way and nearby waitrose;
Not so good points
Gosport traffic but roads to hamble and Chichester also suffer from slow locals, generally main route from Portsmouth served by good a3 not horrendous m3 so usually
Flows and is fine and you have green ferry to Pompey sights nearby plus gunwharf for cinemas and clothes shopping if required and ferries to France and the island if required
As said some roll beyond G - certainly less as said by C pontoon and further up creek
Age of facilities on G pontoon need updating to those on A; not up to Berthon and yacht haven standards therefore but better than others
Recent acquisition may lead to excessive price increases, but remains to be seen;
Shortage of longer berths and reported depth problems on some pontoons at low water springs hence dredging
Poor trolley relocation at busy times so none in car park on Friday nights in summer season;

If looking would be interested to see how prices compare with other Gosport marinas though

'Twas often the case when Snark had an old tired MD1B. I often motorsailed hard down the inner swashway before turning into the small boat channel, hoping I'd make it into the harbour while I still had forward momentum before the tide took control and drove me out backwards....

Alas Doris, I couldn't bear another winter of being watched like a hawk by over zealous security or more storm damage to my boat. I hung around as long as I did because I loved my neighbours (Diablo-J and Fuller Spirit and of course your very marvellous self)
I'll probably be back again one day. I like the location.

It's a lot easier to dodge the tide in the approaches now the dredger has had a nibble at the Hamilton Bank but many people seem happy to hug the edge of the ship channel and plug the tide.

Best to keep as close as you dare to Fort Blockhouse (close enough to shake hands with those on the Officer's Mess Terrace) and, if feeling really brave cut inside the BC4 (Tide Gauge) pile. There's a nice eddy flowing against the main ebb that close in!

I much prefer to motor or - sometimes to sail - up and down the harbour rather than fight the road traffic down to Gosport. The road traffic seems to negate the benefit of being near the harbour entrance and if we're in a hurry we can get the boat ready and/or pack her away as we go.

We now live in Gosport, well Alverstoke if you want to be posh. Walking distance to the ferry. A32 traffic is bad I do not use it unless I have to. There are ways around from Fareham or The west on m27. The traffic is no worse than the roads around st Albans where we came from. Better and faster than the M25 A414 etc. Also not as bad as Lyndhurst.

Explore there is everything you may need. I won't tell you the best Indians etc we locals do not want the place full of noisy visiting yachtman.

The snag with that is the need to pass outgoing boats to port!
