Upon a recommendation or two from fellow yotties here in Turkey we made a direct b-line to Hasan's restaurant in Kekova Roads. There is some awful weather coming and we needed to check the forecast. We were told that he has wi-fi. Of course we would be looking to buy a couple of beers at the same time and even considered coming back in the evening for something to eat. I don't think that will be happening...

I won't bore you with the details but this Hasan, who's restaurant is named after him and 'welcomes' yotties, is a nasty piece of work. He told us abruptly that internet connection was for guests only and turned his back on us. When I told him we were looking for drinks he told us internet is for guests who only order food. I then said we would be returning in the evening for dinner and wanted to come to his place because he came recommended. Once again he snapped that internet was for guests only. Clearly he took one look at us and decided he didn't want us there. Both Liz and I were shocked at his general nastyness, and so I told him this. I reminded him that this was no way to treat potential customers.

I'm sure we've all been there from time to time and normally one forgets it and moves on, walks away. But what makes this exchange different is that after telling us he didn't want to talk to us he then threatened us by asking what boat we were on and that he would 'come and visit us'. He didn't mean he'd pop over for a friendly chat and a drink.

We're stuck here in Kekova Roads whilst a gale force wind blows down the side of the Aegean, pegging us in and preventing us from leaving, and this local, who clearly got out the wrong side of bed, takes an instant dislike to us and threatens us.

Please do us a favour: if you ever visit Kekova Roads (and you should because it's stunning), don't give Hasan your business. Go to Ibrahim next door. At least he had the decency to tell us his wi-fi wasn't working and pointed us to a bar where we could get connection.

I'm going to follow this up with some heart-warming words, which I received in an email 10 minutes after the above incident. It's from Ilkin, who is the manager of Delta Marina in Girne, Northern Cyprus. On the day we left I conducted an interview with him to be published on our website (it's a little project I work on from time to time). Here is his reply:

Hi Jamie

It is a wonderful article.....
It is also good for my country and for marina....
I sent links to all my friends, Deniz, boat owners (specially the foreigners).
I also inform the Tourism Ministery....

THANK YOU VERY MUCH..........

It's very unusual to experience such behaviour in Turkey. I can vouch for Ibrahim, we found him to be very helpful and pleasant. He serves good food and delivers a free loaf of bread to your boat the following morning.
Competition is stiff at Kekova and on our first visit we ate at Ibrahim's. From that point on we could never bring ourselves to eat elsewhere, it would seem "unfaithful" to use another when Ibrahim's was so good.
Forget your bad experience with Hasan and enjoy your stay, it's a very safe anchorage and there are lots of genuine locals ashore.

We have been informed that there are infact TWO Hasan's. I should reiterate that this is the Hasan's NEXT to Ibrahim, the one with the great big sign that says 'Hasans' when you enter the bay. The Hasan with a greasy, grey pony-tail who needs a punch in the chops.

Yes, it is very unusual. We love the Turks; Liz's sister-in-law is Turkish; her brother owns a place in Bodrum...blah blah blah...great place. But this one a-hole... grrrrr... it's really wound me up!

I'm going to make a point of eating at Ibrahim's tonight, and I'm going to ask for the table closest to Hasan's so I can look over my shoulder and catch Hasan's eye whilst chomping and guffawing at the top of my voice and doing other childish things that'll make me feel better.

Not sure what you've said or what Hasan may have think you've said but I hope you've not mucked things up for other cruisers.

Hasan is more of less the Mayor of Ucagiz Limani and has put in so much to develop the village for tourists and cruisers, that it must have been something significantly upsetting to lead to the situation you describe.

He is certainly not a bad piece of work - in fact an all round good guy.

I've eaten at all the restaurants many times, had free bread also delivered by all (incl Hasan) each morning - and always found it a lovely place to stay.

And I'll believe you'll find Ibrahim is either Hasans brother or one of his best mates. So be careful what you are eating when (in your own words) you'll be guffawing at the top of your voice and doing other childish things that make you feel better.

of course, this was intended for the demented boy, not the jolly swagman who hits the nail on the head. People can be such a drag at imes. Demonic is also very new to cruising, he may need to learn how to act in a non english or brit society. It is enlightening to see, but sadly, so commonplace. Perhaps an 'english breakfast served all day' would be better than trying to get freebies for the so called promise of jam later to a person who does his best to provide a service.
Maybe even 'live chelsea match' would be more appropriate ?. dunno really.

Hmm, maybe your other than forthright approach was the problem, when in rome etc. I followed your occasional posts for sometime here and I cannot (sic) understand how this could arise.... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Perhaps you need to chill a tad more.

HI Demonboy! I was also surprised by your experience, have been to Hasan's many times and would rate those among the best along this coast. There are actually many Hasan's in Kekova, due to the good name of the original. There are at least two in Kale Kuy and I think there is at least another one (if not two) in Ucagiz. The 'real' Hasan for me is the most easterly one in Ucagiz. Which one did you meet?

btw: forecast now looks good for the Lycian coast the coming days; I have not seen any more gale warning. Heading your way with Michelle so might meet you somewhere; Kalkan or Kas??

From wot I've read of his log, he's not all that new to cruising, and according to his "Porthole" interviews, seems above average on "acting in non-brit society"

Hello robbynlessy
I see you are not cruisers either, just holidaying types. So, I am sorry if you do not understand the thinking, I also understand how hard it is to explain the realities of such a life to people embroiled in their working life. Perhaps, when you do get out there, you will understand. Please accept my apologies for your lack of reasoning and experience. It comes with the turf.
PS, Nice boat you have, impressed, how many miles to the gallon do you get whilst cruising ? would love to know as I always wanted one. Seems like a cheap option with a small motor. Have you considered buying the sails for it. I had a tinker tramp, great dinghy, eventually bought a mast and sails, was really good. Different world /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.
Please let me know how you get on if you do decide to add sticks as many could learn from the experience. Have you a website or blag ?. to peruse in the meantime

You're so insightful Glug, but I'm optimistic about improving my reasoning and experience through the diligent study of your thought provoking and learned posts. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Whilst it may not always be apparent, I'm sure that I speak for us all, when I express my gratitude to you, for ignoring those tenets set out in Mathew 7.6 by continuing to provide these missives for our shared enlightenment.

[/ QUOTE ]So what is your boat then, glug? How come your profile is blank? That is the typical troll. What a waste of our time and space. You are now the second entry on my 'ignore this user' list.

Wow, just got back online and read Glugboat's response. Who is this Glugboat person? Need I ask? I think I know, despite his anonymity. I'm with Twister_Ken and Lady Jessie, and thank you Olive Oil for bothering to think before you write.

Update: we are now at Hassan Roma in Kale Koy and this Hassan couldn't be more different. His wife is wonderfully pleasant too. I do take issue with Swagman's comment though... [ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ] I don't care if the bloke is the Sultan of Turkey or the King of the Galaxy, the way he behaved that morning was inexcusable. If I felt that I was in some way in the wrong I wouldn't have bothered posting up this complaint. The fact is Liz and I generally get on with most people, so if I felt this was something to do with my behaviour I'd question myself and wonder if it were me. No, the guy clearly got out the wrong side of bed that morning. He ruined our day, ruined our stay in Ucagiz in fact, and behaved in a disgusting manner certainly not akin to an ambassador of a place heavily reliant on tourism.

We are always just missing each other. I am writing this from the jetty of Hassan Roma. Great fast wifi service! Great food too!

I did spend last night with the 'real' Hassan and I now have a lot more understanding of your experience. He does really have an issue with English people. We got talking over a raki (or three....) and he described his view of different nationalities. Unfortunately, the English were pretty far down the list. He seems to have had (in his mind) some pretty bad experiences. It was mainly related to people reserving space and then never turn up, or being generally unfriendly. He has the impression that this happens with the English in a much higher proportion than say Germans or French. Please note: his words, not mine. If I was to be his advocate I would say that the English 'stand off-ishness' and the failure to show emotions can sometimes come over as 'unfriendly' if you don't understand the English. I do know that you, Demonboy, definitely do not fall into this standard category. Unfortunately, there are people who have fixed notions of character based on random information like; language accent, skin colour, sex, boat size, you name it......

I think you have exposed Hassan to fall into that category. Shame.... as his food and service is second to none.......

LJ, your anti-English views are well-known in this forum so it comes as no surprise that you bring this subject up, yet again. It annoys me because this thread isn't about being English and has nothing to do with me being English, at least I don't think it has. If Hassan treats people the way he treated me that morning because I am English then I just feel sorry for the guy. I would hazard a guess that no less than 30% of his business comes from English customers so if this is his attitude then perhaps he should bow out of the catering business. It certainly seems from your comments that this concept of the English being 'stand-offish' with 'failure to show emotions' was his reason for his outburst. Is this what you are suggesting? I'm confused by your comments and what you are insinuating.

I reiterate the reason for this thread: he threatened both Liz and myself and anyone who threatens myself, my partner or my boat will not be allowed to get away with it. That kind of behaviour is both unjustified and unforgivable, whether I'm English, Turkish or Chinese.

Sorry Demonboy; I expressed myself poorly. Me? Anti-English? I was trying to explain Hassan's views, not agreeing with them. He is clearly anti-English. I do really think that I am not and I am horrified if I have expressed myself in a way that makes you feel that I am. Then I have made a fool of myself and I have failed in my communication skills. Coming from a minority group myself; I try to be sensitive to superficial prejudices and I will confront them when I meet them. Hassan did express baseless nonsense and I told him what I thought about that. Sorry I did not made that clear in my response.
