Has your NASA SX35 DSC VHF lost it\'s MMSI memory?

My NASA SX35 DSC VHF, which I purchased last summer, has just lost my MMSI number from it's memory. This is a nonvolatile memory so does not rely on power.

NASA has offered to correct the fault without quibble, but the issue I wanted to alert others to is that you get no warning about this memory loss until you try using the DSC function.

If I had been in distress and pressed the red button under the cover the signal would not have been sent as my MMSI number would not have been in the memory.

Other MMSI numbers that I had entered into the directory had also been lost.

I recommend you check that your MMSI memory has not been wiped clear BEFORE you need to send a distress message.

Please let me know if you also have the problem.

No probs with mine.

There is a failure rate on any electronic component. Any reason for thinking its more than that?

If your MMI number has been lost, it is likely it is being held in memory by an internal backup battery. I would ask NASA if this is the case as it will be an issue on all NASA SX35 DSC VHF units at some point in the future. Nonvolatile memory does not neccessarily operate without backup power (take for example NVRAM this has to have a battery). Please let us know the response, if any from NASA.

Re: Has your NASA SX35 DSC VHF lost it\'s MMSI memory?

Must say that I bought my SX35 after reading the report in PBO, which rated it highly. Also, the m/mi was best (man/machine interface, of course!!) (That means the switches and knobs!!).

BUT, it refuses to accept the GPS data from my MLR, despite checking that the correct sentences are being output and knowing that my Yeoman runs happily from the MLR. The people who support the NASA refuse to help.

I then bought an ICOM as 'box 2', and am amazed that its sound quality is much better. Reminds me that if something is cheap, it's probably cheap.
