Has this forum had its day ?

I have been around on this forum from nearly its beginning. Yes it was livelier before the advent of the Lounge but that was mainly because effectively the Mobo forum was the Lounge with many discussions that veered off wildly from boating into other areas of life. It was indeed a very freewheeling place with little or no moderation and that brings me to my point

Along with splitting the forums into ever smaller sub forums, something with which I never agreed, has come an overweening nanny state form of moderation which I'm sure has driven many forumites away. Nowadays the forums are moderated much like I imagine the Womens Institute forums are moderated with even the mildest of mild swear words that wouldnt raise an eyebrow on other forums resulting in a ban on this one

And yes the new structure of the forum doesnt help. It is indeed slow and unwieldy but I guess we'll get used to that

I understand your point about moderation but I would say that the old style mobo forum, whilst being a lively place, was a good place to be whereas the Lounge is rather less pleasant and is somewhere I rarely venture ?

On the new forum software I initially thought it was good but it is now so clunky when typing that it can only discourage participation if it isn’t sorted.

I have been on this forum for around 12 years now, although I don't visit or post as much as I used to.
About 5 and half hours ago I posted requesting some advice on a bow thruster issue and got one response ( thanks VAS) at the same time I copied and posted the same on facebook and have a much
better response with detailed tests to carry out and even offers to come and have a look.

Maybe this forum has outlived its usefulness?
I've been on since 2002 and must agree, I do not log on so often now, fed up of been told I no nothing about boat electrics after 40 years designing and supplying charging systems and switch panels. We seem to live in world were people have read something and that is it, right or wrong any facts to the contrary do not count.

I agree. In fact my interaction with the mods would have had me gone if it wasn't for the fact I'm Ill & struggle to find things to do. I have no problem with gentle moderation but when they seem to side with clear wind up merchants (& crooks ?) over customers who buy from their advertisers because "the rule computer says so" defies common sense IMO

To be fair, they can't really moderate based on whether a user has, or may, buy something from an advertiser. How would they even know, and why should the fact change how a person is allowed to behave in here.

It doesn’t help that the new platform is so sluggish and resource-hungry. I’m finding it such a nuisance to use that I tend to have a quick peek at thread titles and unless something instantly grabs my attention I migrate to somewhere more in tune with the world in 2020.
I agree, it is taking me ages just to write this as the page keeps freezing

Facebook lets you post unlimited videos/photos.
The more content you post, the more facebook makes from ads.
This place lets you post duck all.

Well it didn’t true enough but the new version enables easy photo posting.......

Regardless of anything else, having online platforms that are not reliant on the likes of facebook and their shadiness is a notion we should all be supporting.

My 2 cents.

I have been a member since 2010, and have found the information very useful, though as you see I am not a frequent poster.

I have been off-line with family over Christamas, in common with may others I am sure.

However, typing this reply is very slow and clunky compared with the previous version, so some IT input is needed.

Happy New Year everyone.

I'm using the latest available Apple Mac and by page 2 the Apple wheel of death is doing cartwheels waiting for the system somewhere to catch up. What an awful link / website / App this has become. To complete this reply I had to log out of Safari completely and then restart the App.

Still no idea how to set the display to show newest messages first - I don't need to re-read earlier messages on extended treads whilst looking for the last start point.

I'm using chrome on windows pc's and on android tablets/phone. All works fine for me? It's quiet here because it's Christmas an not much boating is going on to report.....same happens every year. You get the "what did you get for Christmas" thread started by Seastoke every year and that's usually a topic that runs till the new year but it will all start again soon. This is a great forum and I'd hate for it not to be here.

I've been using the forum on my phone and on Chrome and find it runs fine. My only gripe is that my images seem to be too large to upload.

Regarding "has the forum had its day?", like others I've been taking a bit of a break for Christmas and to be hones don't have an awful lot to share anyway.

Regarding Facebook, I created a Fairline Owners Group a little over a year ago and already have over a 1000 members and it's quite an active group. I guess people like the familiarity, the notifications and the ease of photo uploading etc. It is harder to monetize though compared to a Forum.
