Has the replacement of the CG66 been a success?

When the coastguard replaced the CG66 with the RYA SafeTrx it cut the traffic of the VHF massively so I am sure that from their point of view that is a success. However buying a cynic I was never sure of the value of reporting your passage plans in the first place because few reported their arrival. I suspect the the App is simply not used. I have mixed views about the whole system.

I used RYA SafeTrx as the replacement for the CG66 nothing else. Passage plans are lodged with Mrs Sandy, she does not sail, and radio checks are done with NCI at Rame Head as I sail out of Plymouth. NCI are extremely helpful and will confirm if they can see you on AIS and radar. Transiting Solent CG area it is great to hear them regularly inform pleasure craft to call NCI for radio checks.

As often explained on here, the SafeTrax can perform one or both of two distinct functions.
- Firstly as a replacement for the CG66 as a static database of bostvand contact details. This does not need the app as can be done via the Web,
- Secondly, and optionally, as a means of recording passage plans - primarily aimed at small craft without fixed VHF / DSC etc.

We would have to ask MCA to find out if the CG66 replacement aspect has been a success, in terms if comparative numbers of registered boats. RYA Safetrax have recently sent out very badly worded emails after 2 years saying our accounts will be deleted unless updated - rather than a polite reminder after 12 months saying please update or confirm.

The CG66 system was not used for passage plans, but SafeTrax does have this feature. However, as far as I know (and I may be wrong), absolutely nothing is done if a passage is not recorded as having been completed, so may be useless in practice. Happy to be corrected
