Has the market been worse?

Well thats what it said on the ad website on www.afloat.ie and given the current financial climate I'm amazed they're even bothering...

The press report mentions "a marine village ashore with over 500 square meters of undercover exhibit space" and an expected 17,000 visitors. It'll sure be cosy.

I see that just one of the two original main halls at ExCeL has a floor area of about 44,000 sq m (480,000 sq ft)!

Apologies for the thread drift.

I dont understand the yacht market?

I have been looking for a while intending to purchase a blue water cruiser up to £300K. So many of the yachts of this type seem to be on the market for month after month. Very few sell and very few new examples appear.

It seems in recent months to have become even more noticeable.

Is this normal? Will good examples eventually sell or would you expect to have to take a very substantial reduction to force a sale?

Do people think the market has fundamentally changed?

ITs a tough time to buy a good used boat at the moment. The europeans have been over and taken all the good ones!! With a strong euro, they have raided our supplies of quality sail boats for the last 24 months or more. Any realistically or moderately overpriced centre cockpit boat in reasonable condition is now living in europe. The boats that we have remaining in the uk are limited to mass production boats so that if youre looking for something more limited or specialised its a tough search. Look to see how many westerlys, moodys, bavaria centre cockpit, etc etc are for sale now in the uk and youll see the dilema. Brokerge listings are at an all time low. Advertise your boat on apolloduck or similar and youll be plagued by brokers wanting to take youre boat on. I think that the problem is intensified because sailers are watching their money gaining no interest in the bank and they are realising that they could invest it in some pleasure instead. They know that quality boats tend to keep pace with inflation while less robust boats might not. Anything that has hung around for months has done so because it is either tatty or well overpriced. I sold a westerly oceanlord recently for the right money even though a broker tried to convince me a was asking to much!
