Has someone bought a cheap Beneteau Oceanis 331 ????

There's one on Boatshop in Wales for £47K ask so assuming Welsh one is overpriced - as most UK boats are - state of the market - credit crunch - it's there - we are here - cost of getting there - its an Oceanis - seems about right if not bit expensive to me

Seven year old Benetteau. Probably ex-charter.

Not exactly 'cheap' unless its inventory and state are outstanding. Based on what I have seen delivered here from Greece, I would have said that somewhere around £ 30 -£32k after VAT would be more of a ball-park figure.

How does the system work buying a yacht on Ebay? Having made the top bid is the buyer committed to buy ? Presumably they havent seen the boat had it surveyed or anything at this point.

It depends on the seller. Some allow a survey post auction others say come and see before auction but if you bid and win you are the owner, no exceptions. With psot auction surveys I guess the debate starts when the survey picks up a problem......

Ebay rules state highest bidder is entering a legal contract to buy.

I don't think you should be embarrassed at making an offer however low it is.

Provided you do it politely, and have an eye on what you want the seller(s) to do if they're shocked. That is, they may say 'no way', in which case it's harder to make a credible second offer. Whereas if your offer is low, but the gap between what you offer and what the sellers are expecting isn't too great, they're more likely to make you a counter-proposal.

Asking price isn't relevant. It's what the sellers are really expecting (reasonably or unreasonably) that matters in the negotiation.

Any sensible boatowner knows the average boat is worth less now than it was, and may hang around a long while unless they treat any potential buyer seriously. If the sellers don't see that, move on and find some more realistic sellers.

IMHO boat values will decline further as the 'credit crunch' bites harder, some new boats get discounted and some sellers of secondhand boats drop their prices as they get keener to sell. But who really knows . . .
