Has anyone installed a reasonably priced stainless sink?

My sink (50x33x15cm) has seen better days and I was thinking of replacing it. However a direct replacement has been quoted at £370.

Looking for cheaper alternatives I came across Thetford rectangular stainless sinks. They are a British company in Rotherham, I think. Unfortunately an email request for some version/part number details was answered by a member of their sales prevention team. I went on to ask several of their dealers if they can explain the different models ; they genuinely regretted they couldn't help.

Can anyone suggest an alternative manufacturer? The googlesphere hasn't thrown up any options for small rectangular sinks.

Sinks don't seem to be a popular subject in this forum - mind you it is quite difficult to search on 'sinks' on this forum because of its other connotations.

I may just end up trying to re-polish the old sink.

TIA

There is nothing exciting about a yacht sink. Look at caravan suppliers.

The hard bit will be finding something to fit the hole in the worktop.

If you were starting with a solid top that you can choose the hole size for... ...you'd spend <£100 for the sink as a metal basin

Are your taps seperate?

I've seen a caravan that had a round sink who thought even that was too pricey. They got a stainless mixing bowl and drilled /cut a plug hole in the bottom... Think they said cost about £25 all in..

I assume you have looked on ebay dozens on there, motor home sinks, caravan sinks, boat sinks and house and bathroom sinks.

If it just needs polishing, use fine wet and dry paper, followed by chrome polish.
Depending on how bad it is, you might start with 600 grade, then work down to 2000 grit or beyond before reaching for the solvol autosol or whatever.
Try searching for 'stainless inset basin'

What detail did you want that wasn't covered by their website?

Looks to be roughly the size you want.

Hi Shiny,
Thanks for this and your earlier response.
Yes, I had looked at the caravan suppliers, eBay and general googling - that is what led me to Thetford and no other possible manufacturer with a similar size sink. This led to my appeal her just in case someone else had already gone through this exercise. And you are right, the hard bit is finding something to fit the hole in the worktop. I have separate taps.

As to Thetford: The Linear appears to be manageably larger than the current sink but it has a unique profile (from what I can make out).
The Thetford website only describes a SBL1750 which has a glass top which I do not require (I find a wood cutting board better for lemon slices - my most frequent culinary activity). Apparently they make (made?) 1700 (no top), 1710,1720,etc up to 1750. Each has a different cutout. Their sinks on eBay and elsewhere are currently 1701 and 1709 and the sellers cannot tell me what the last digit signifies. And, honestly, I am now not that keen on buying from a company that is so careless about it's customer facing skills.

As no one has so far suggested an alternative manufacturer it looks as though I'll be going (a la lw395) with the re-polish attempt (I have a full stainless polishing kit).

Try these http://timage.eu/marine/. They are based in Basildon, Essex. Don't be put off by the 'swanky' bits in their catalogue, they are really quite competitively priced, and cater for all. Used them quite a few times during my refit and found them very good to deal with.

That's quite an unusual size - is it a double sink?

Penguin list a single sink which is 52 x 33 x 20 for £208. Was the one they wanted £370 for a special made-to-order sink?

Yes it is a double - far too sophisticated for my sailing - essentil at home.

The £370 was for a standard double sink. £208 is still too much for a "I think i'll ......." type project.

In my opinion it is greatly preferable, on a boat, to have a sink which has a bottom which has something of a slope down to the plughole. Amazingly few stainless sinks have this feature. A flat bottomed sink means that unless your boat (and its interior fittings) is exactly level, both fore and aft and side to side, it is nigh on impossible to completely drain the sink: you always have a bit of water (or worse) slopping around in the bottom.

Thanks for the tip.
