Has anyone bought or used a South Pacific 710FS windless.

I am thinking of buying a South Pacific 710FS windless for use with 6 mm chain. My anchor is a SL Delta weighing 6 kg. I normally anchor in about 5m of water with three times the depth of chain.

With anchor chain at about 0.8 kg per m and assuming that I might be initially lifting approx 10 m allowing for the curve of the chain to the bottom, I estimate the static load to be initially about 15 Kg not allowing for the load from the wind on the boat. In reality however I would be motoring up onto the anchor so that the chain would be vertical.

My boat is only a 20 foot Motor Sailor.

Has anyone used these windless. The motor is rated at 300 w which is not a lot, however in my previous boat which was a Westerly Pentland, I installed a vertical SL windless which was only 120 watts and that lifted my 35 lb CQR with 5/16 chain so this would be more that twice the power for half the load but I still worry that the SP 710 may be light. :(

I installed one of these in my last boat, a Legend 27ft. Similar sized chain and anchor and had no problems at all. it never tripped the relay and worked fine.

I used to have one on my old boat and it worked very well with the 7.5kg anchor and 30ft of chain I had.

My experience of anchoring (East Coast) is that often it's not the weight of the gear that's the issue but the pull required to get the anchor out of the mud.

I have the same problem in Poole harbour. I pull the chain up tight and either let the boat move around or gently motor (engine in tickover) over the anchor and then use the windlass again. Has worked so far ...........

Thanks to all who replied to my post, very much appreciated. I had seen the above sellers website relating to the 18 feet of chain limit but when I go on the manufacturers website I cannot see any limitation to anchor chain length on the 710F and 710FS units.

In fact, I had seen this warning and it worried me as I can only use 100% chain due to space limitations within my anchor chain locker hence my post here on PBO.

I have contacted the UK suppliers as I can't see the problem other than if you were out in the middle of the "Ogin" and you let the anchor free-fall with 20 m of chain and 7 kg anchor in 25 m of water then the sudden braking effect by releasing the switch may cause damage.

Once again thanks.
