Has anyone bought a boat in Sweden ??

Ryan air fly into Göteborg city, also Landvetter is the other Gothenburg airport..
Stockholm has Arlanda and I guess another... Copenhagen might also be an option if there's something down south for you and if the flights are better..
You are very welcome to get in touch if you need info, and if I can help you I will :)

I bought my boat from Sweden because there are few in the UK. I visited it twice, once for a viewing, second time to get it ready for transport home. Even using budget flights, these were long and expensive trips. My insurance company wanted a survey report from a UK surveyor, so I had to pay his travel and accomodation costs. Then getting it back by road was another big expense (£2k), even though it was on its own trailer. It had to come on a commercial DFDS ferry trip acoross the North Sea as it was oversize for the passenger ferries. That costs more. Also I had to wait until the Spring as studded tyres are required in Sweden in winter and my delivery company did not have a suitably equipped vehicle.

All in all, it added £4k to the cost.

Dfds ferries are who I was looking at, What size is your boat and was it collected from the sellers home, Roughly what part of Sweden to what part of UK. Did they just tow it with a 4x4
Regards

It's a 9.2m hull with a 13m mast...

It came from Vastervik Marina on the East coast of Sweden to Pwllheli in North Wales. It was towed by a Nissan Patrol. At 3.2 tonnes boat+trailer weight it's just within the maximum limit for a few 4x4 cars on an ordinary driving license (I think the towing license regs have changed since then and new drivers have to do an additional test now for this weight).

If you're looking at one on the east coast, then Ryanair also fly to Skavsta and Västerås (the latter being a small, and hence fast, airport).

I think if you buy one now the chances are the winter storage will already be paid for. It's almost impossible to sell a boat in Sweden at this time of year (I know as mine is on the market) so if you buy now you might be able to get a good deal with a 'höstprs' (autumn price). I'm gonna be back in the Stockholm area in the next couple of weeks messing about in boats, so if you want me to take a look at any for you let me and I'll see what I can do.

Thank you very much Tom, Thats a generous offer.
Heres where I'm at, Transport the whole way will probably be far to expensive,
If I could get a boat on a trailer and some how get it on to the Gothenburg to Immingham freight ferry I could possible hire a friend to drive to Immingham and tow it back to Ireland at a reasonable cost.
The only real other option would be to buy one without a trailer and keep in a yard there until the Summer and hire a skipper & ( buy herself a very big present ) so I can crew back. Even at that I am based in West Cork ( down near the Mizzen ) and its a very long way. I would also have to factor in hiring a liferaft and getting all or gear to Sweden at summer flight costs.
I can actually fly to Gothenburg from Dublin in November for 190euro return for 2 so thats not bad at all.
Has anyone used the Immingham ferry before ? Or shipped unaccompanied freight ?

I've twice crewed on delivery trips from Swedish yards (one Najad, one Hallberg Rassy, very nice :) ). One was only destined as far as Kiel, for the British Forces training centre there, but the other was coming back to Gosport. In both cases we went through the Kiel Canal; on the Gosport-bound trip the plan was to coast-hop along the Dutch/Belgian/French coast instead of crossing the North Sea direct (I flew home from Hamburg though).

A possible alternative route to consider.

I ship caravans and cars to Sweden, usually using the Immingham DFDS service unacompanied. A 25' caravan is around £1000.00 one way.
You get it delivered to the docks and they load it on the next ferry, make sure you get the release number from the people who deliver it and that lets you pick it up at the other end.

Language is never a problem, travel is easy but accomodation and eating out can be expensive. There is a Swedish version of b&b where you can rent a private small apartments by the night much cheaper than hotels, but I havn't done that for a few years.

One good thing if it has a trailer and its plated (trailers in Sweden have yearly MOT and are registered seperately) then it should be road worthy, unlike many UK trailers.

nairda, there is an Albin Vega for sale here on the West Coast for £3800, and it says on the advert the price can be discussed...
With regards to insurance and surveyer, why not get them both here?

If you got one on the east coast you could always take it through the canal to get it to Göteborg. It's a very nice trip in itself and would be a good place to get to know the boat if you're not comfortable on the sea. You dont need to take the mast down, and there are a few bits of it where you can sail.

Spoke to a friend of mine who imports caravans from the UK... UK to Gothenburg (would assume its the same the other way around) £600 & something.. dfds.. unattended..

Ok so the ferry with the boat unattended will probably be in the region of 800 euro , The flights to View the boat are reasonable if times are flexible, around 200 euro it seems. The Rosslare-Pembroke ferry in mid week January will cost about 350 euro return towing. Allow 500 euro for fuel and payment for friend to do the trip. So far so good. The next problem is that the Folkboat must have its own road worthy trailer and it would probably be on the east coast which would mean either finding a very willing seller and paying them to deliver to ferry port or hiring a Swedish transport company to tow it there, Wonder what that would cost ? Say Stockholm to Gothenburg.
My main worry is if there was a costly problem along the way my budget would be gone.

Are you desperate to buy the boat now... as most of the owners to smaller boats have given up trying to sell, until the spring. So there may well be a few here on the west coast for sale then...
Check out dfds for the exact pricing, I believe its sorted from the UK when my mate gets his caravans.
But I do agree the road trailer could be a problem.. then again you could find one with a trailer here on the west coast with a trailer, then problem solved :)
How much approximately do these boats that you've been looking at weigh?

Well no not really, Originally I was looking for a project so I wanted the whole winter to work on it but if I was to buy from Sweden then it could wait, The only thing is I may well come across a nice project in the mean time, I was going to go to the UK in November to view a few but now I have some courses coming up that are costing quite a bit. On the plus side the longer I wait the more money I might have and less winter fees I need to pay. If I wiki folkboat it says the hull wait is 4500lb or 2 ton.

Ok, yes I understand.. I'll certainly keep my ears and eyes open.. with regards to winter fees, its most likely they've been paid. I was at the marina where we keep our boat yesterday and I would say 90% were out of the water now. That can also be a reason there aren't so many here for sale, as probably the sellers have given up until the spring..
Like I say eyes and ears will be open:)
