Anybody know why Ha'penny Pier appears to be shut early? The gangways are raised and there's not a single boat on it but it's supposed to be open until the 15th of this month according to the HHA website

Does that mean the ferry isnt running either? It moors on one of the pontoons (the other side of which is for yachts)

Last week the bridge to the furthest pontoon was up for annual maintenance - i know because i was moored the wrong side of it!

Maybe maintenance?

Have often used it in the winter. No showers open in the winter, but no charge either. If the little drawbridge between the sections is raised for any reason, just use the first section by the steps but avoiding the area where the fishing boats unload.

It was moving around yesterday.

Are you on Pagan?
Were you off Felixstowe beach yesterday morning? - saw a similar looking yacht out ( I was walking the dog on the beach)!

Yup, on Pagan indeed but we were nailed to a pontoon up at Fox's yesterday. (Went upriver from Shotley on Friday, came back through this morning)

I suspect just a temporary issue, perhaps weather related. I've stayed overnight there in late November. As others have said no facilities, but accessible.

Have been a regular user of Ha'penny Pier for several years and really enjoy Harwich. I have often wondered why given it's central location and proximity to thousands of sailing craft and good tidal access that funding has never been obtained to significantly increase it's moorings, facilities and accessibility. I am sure it would provide a significant financial boost to local businesses and should Ha'penny pier area not be suitable then space the other side of Trinity House pier would appear to offer potential . I regularly see boats turning away due to lack of space or confidence in being able to moor safely. The facilities afforded to sailing visitors to France and Belgium demonstrate how nearby towns benefit.

Totally agree with above......always busy when we come past (generally weekends in the summer) and we are put off by the potential of having to raft up

I'm torn. I can see the appeal of having a little more space, however, I also selfishly like the charm of how it is. Rafted and outside is ok during the day but I always prefer to be inside for an overnight. There is just space to raft inside if you're happy negotiating the fishing boat moorings but it took me a while a build confidence with that.

I think this illustrates the difference in approach between UK and many other countries.
In many countries I've visited, if there is a point of interest, there will often be facilities provided, such as car parks, toilets even picnic areas and free barbecues etc. Here we would rather put up fences, and yellow lines and notices saying go away you're not welcome.
