A while ago I found chartlet of Ha'penny Pier in Harwich and now I've been and gone an lost it. Anyone know where I can find it?-the charlet that is not the pier!! Thinking of visiting next week en route to the Ore and Alde.

We are thinking about visiting Halfpenny pier. What is the process I.e. Do you need to call to let the harbour master know you are coming or do you just turn up.

Turn up, tie up, if there is space. Charges apply for overnight stop. (probly cash only) Water tap, heads and shower, no leccy. The HM will find you and they are jolly characters, they have big fenders available.
Explore the very historic old town, ferries to Shotley and Felix, lots of blue plaques, eg Pepys and Nelson spliced the mainbrace here, and they are actually true as well!

Well, It can be a bit rolly either side if the wind / sea are up. (Less so on the inside of course.)
I stayed there earlier this season and it was almost mill pond - but I tied up too tight to the HM's fenders which ground away at my hull! which I polished out ok with a fair bit of elbow grease.
I would think there was normally not much chance of damage as the HM will send you away if its too wild.
Don't tie up too tight or too loose ! (that helps doesn't it!)

If it does seem too noisy for you, those piers make strange grinding noises in the night, there is a very easy 2nd resort, leave and hang a left, towards the roro terminal, and there is a large string of mooring buoys, operated by the port authority.
I was told to go on there when the H Pier was jam packed for the Sea Shanty festival, and I was told they are free. They are big strong buoys with pickup lines, piece of cake even in the dark. And free, just grab one, hope this helps Jerry

Thanks for the responses. My nephew is coming up for a couple of days sailing and as the tides don't work too well for anything else I thought a stop over in Harwich would make a change of scene. Not too bothered about the noise, but then I'm half deaf anyway! I'm looking at next Monday night; would I be right in assuming that the demand lessens once 1600 passes and the mooring fee becomes payable? I'd rather avoid a dinghy ashore for the pub.

Pot luck really sniper, be ready to raft! When I have been absolutely needing to stop there overnight, I used to go in midmorning to stake my claim..

Old Harwich is an interesting place to explore. Best curry on the East Coast as well, Safir. We much prefer rafting up because the tricky bit is sitting next to the dock if a big ship goes past, you can bounce up and down a bit. The HM's are two of the nicest blokes you could meet, one of them stayed and chatted with our two youngest children for about 15 minutes complimenting them on how they handled the ropes. You meet lots of Dutch who know a thing or two about a free night, it's all very open and the HM's said if you arrive after they close and leave before they open it's a free night. We have paid for a few and it's good value. We've also stopped there a few times to collect a curry ordered from about 2 miles out, tie up, collect it and munch it as we motor up the Orwell ;)

We just spent a great night there on Friday had to raft as it was very busy and we were third boat but great hospitality. Hm were very nice showers and wc good. Would recommend the Thai and the alma for real ale. Thanks Richard and Wendy
