Handheld DSC VHF MMSI Number?

So I can program handheld with my boats MMSI (issued already for stationary unit) for emergency calls.

And how will you then issue position requests from ship to portable? How will you raise the alarm from the water to your boat that you're overboard? How will you call your boat with the same number? The main purpose of these is communicating with your own boat, if you use the same number then all of that functionality is lost and you may as well have bought a cheaper handheld.
OFCOM is not a difficult website, just register properly!

Yeah, but... I can use any spare radio on board in case the main one packs-up. So I can use the handheld as emergency back-up. So I can program handheld with my boats MMSI (issued already for stationary unit) for emergency calls. Who cares?
Going out of the boat I may disable this function, so will be 'legal'. It all depends for what use the radio is intended.
Should it be used as separate, even on other boats - then another license is naturally needed, for the number to be different. And no worries that "it's only legal in UK" - in Poland last year there was no license available for handhelds - legalities not catching up with reality - but handhelds were in use. They work regardless of paperwork, it seems ;)
You could programme the same MMSI number in 10 different radios, no one will stop you, but it would be just as wrong and just daft as the advice in this post. I think the OP wanted the correct information for his handheld DSC.

You could always give Ofcom a call and ask them. I've always found them very helpful on the phone and by email.

But I wouldn't get all the fun of the wit and humour on here!

Thanks to all.

A lot of interesting points and lots of things that I hadn't thought about!

Tony.

Not wishing to get into an argument about the need to hold a ships portable licence only for a dsc HH, or how to use their web site

I draw attention to section 3 of the linked pdf and the tick box section on section 3, of a paper application.

This aspect doesn't work on the web site as far as I can see.
You can list a DSC Handheld on your ships licence and use the same call sign instead of using the T number but you still need to register it separately to get a portable MMSI - that's why that aspect doesn't work on the website.
