I have the option to get a Garmin 276c plus two areas covered for a very reasonable price.

Then I thought, the guy selling it isnt reasonable, SO I thought I would ask for info and ideas about handheld GPS which hold charts. I have heard that the 276c is costly and difficult to keep up to date. Any ideas?

Depends on what you want for your boat. I have a 276c as a primary chartrtplotter on my Etap 22i mounted on the handrail in the companionway. I use a pivoted RAM bracket that allows it to be read from the cockpit or the chart table and it works ideally.

Expensive to buy but outstanding quality in charts and very ergonomic. Advised to update charts every two years but you do get a discount when you hand back the old chart. The 276c can also be used in your car so is a bit of a hybrid. It is not primarily classed as a handheld but I'm thrilled with mine. Has rechargeable battery and this gives an advantage of being independent of boat's power supply. Full charge gives 15 hours use. I use a Halford's power pack for longer term charging afloat.

Sorry to throw a curve-ball here .... but at that price what about a full plotter ... say the Lowrance 3600 etc. ? With charting Greenland to Medi ... thrown in !

I'm not connected to Lowrance - except a happy user ....

If you are going to use it in the car as well then I can recommend the 278C - it has the roads built in and can search by postcode which I gather the 276C doesn't.

If it is just for boating then I agree with SBC - you need to decide if you want a handheld or a fixed set. The screen on the 276/278 is excellent, but if it were your primary method for navigation then it is too small. For use as an extra to paper navigation then I think it ideal.
