tried that, still can't build enough momentum to get over the first compression when i drop one valve. the lifters are useful when the battery is low as benbow says but not for hand cranking.

If it's a diesel it doesn't matter how flat the battery is, you are only using it to turn the engine over. After that it's the compression of the diesel in the cylinders that makes it fire/start. You could take the battery off and still start it by hand as long as your diesel pump is mechanical..

Exactly, but that's not the issue. It's how to get enough welly behind the handle to overcome the initial kick of compression.

Having just watched the Return of the King, I think the ultimate solution is to keep an emergency troll in the wet locker.

I have a Cheoy Lee Offshore 27 that only starts with the crank. It has a 1 cy MD-1. I wear a glove on the right hand, start with both hands and build up the speed. After about 10 revs I move my left hand up to the compression lever while still cranking as fast as I can. I throw the lever on the downstroke and push down thru the compression, then pull the handle away. If my timing is off it either doesn't start or kicks the handle out of my hands.

HAVING A SMALL 1GM10, I used to hand start her all the time, untill this weekend, when the hand start lobby thingy broke off. Still, have 3 batteries, so just have to rely on them, or fit a new crankshaft!

Starting an old single pot Kubota by hand was no problem.

Tried the same with current, then 15-year-old Volvo 2003 and instantly stripped the rusty lugs off the shaft. Now I ensure I always run the engine for at least half an hour each outing even when sailing on and off mooring
