Hand Held VHF and cold weather

EVs have battery management systems which monitor battery temperature and can heat/cool the batteries as required.

Don't they need batteries for that, seems a bit catch22.

I have a dry cell battery tray for my standard horizon hh and compared to the rechargeable battery pack it drains the batteries very quickly.
1 day of use from the beach to dingies and kayaks compared to 3 or 4....
So only really any good as an emergency back up.

Just tried it with alkaline AA cells. Same effect as original battery pack. i.e. - outside fridge 4 bars (full charge) - when cold 2 bars on indicator immediately after a cold soak in fridge.
Looks like the battery may be ok and HH will be on my person when its cold at sea !
