Hamble River Pontoon locations

I am thinking about entering the waiting list for a Hampshire County Council mooring on the Hamble. Various sizes, types, prices are listed - along with varying waiting times - on their website but I can't seem to find a chart or diagram showing where these pontoons are. Any ideas? I don't have paper charts, and Navionics is no use.
Out of interest, is HCC the only source of mid river pontoons? Do some of the marinas also offer them?

No rush. I have a building project to keep me busy until 2024 hehehe

Best best is HCC, although Premier Swanwick do have a couple ... but at marina prices.

Depending on size the wating list is short (8m) to rest of my/your life (10m).

The Hamble Ferry owners have a few moorings and provide a River Taxi service to and from yachts on the Hamble. Mike is the owner and his brother runs the River Taxi.
They used to maintain my mooring (H.C.C.)as required and cheaper than T & M.
You could be only 15mins from Southampton Water for their moorings. My own Mooring from the HCC was a fore and aft one.
A lot of the pontoon ones do have cross -tide berths the nearer to Swanwick- even in the Marinas.

If you call them (HM office) I'm sure that they'd send you a chartlet. This is the kind of thing they send out with mooring offers so they have it all to hand. No idea why they don't put it on the web though.

I think that the RAF club also has a few, that they allow new members to use for (I think) up to 3 years, while being on the HM waiting list. Might be worth enquiring about.

Also, HRSC have a few at the smaller end of the scale ( I used on for my XOD).

I would probably only get a 25 or 26 foot boat next time, and I do like the south coast. Also, the Hamble will be comparatively close to home. So one of the 8m moorings might fit the bill.

I'll give them a call to get the chartlet and see if I need to join the waiting list now. I had heard that the smaller berths were comparatively easy to come by.

My experience is of being offered that one in the picture after three years, so at £25/year it would be worth applying now.

Get yourself on the waiting list, as the wait is probably the thick end of 5 years or more (I waited 6 years for mine, and was told that was quick). Just tick all the boxes for mooring types, and tick the box to say that you're no ready to take the mooring yet and pay your £30.

When you are nearly ready for your mooring, give them a call or pop in and talk to them about where you are on the list and they will tell you how long you are likely to wait and where the moorings are.

You can then take a commercial mooring from someone like Tuckers until one comes available for you.

These moorings are very popular and you don't get to pick and choose. However once you have a mooring, it's much easier to ask to move to a different one.

Also remember that talking to the HM midsummer can help if you can take the mooring then but you do need to be on the waiting list. When people release moorings they get nothing back until some-one else takes it on (within the charging period), the HM will try to relet if they can. Thats effectively what I did in 2017 (though I was close to the top anyway, 12-15m berth); took a mooring in May, sublet it till September when I got back from the Med.

One more question. How precisely is the 8metre measurement made? If I got say a 27 foot boat, which is 8.23 metres, would I be ineligible/ evicted ? I will almost certainly get a well known make & model….. I guess I’ve answered myself haven’t I?

The band I'm in (up to 9.75m) is more than I need, so no idea. But, friendly as she is, I wouldn't want to cross Nicola!

The main run of HCC serviced pontoons are in the river off Port Hamble. These cost about twice the price of the more common HCC pile moorings (most of which have private pontoons attached). As others have said just get on the waiting list - the actual time you wait is in reality much less than the length of the list. Also, any future request to change mooring (i.e. if you get a bigger boat) gives you priority from when you originally went on the list.
