Speaking to HM yesterday and we have risen to the lofty heights of the waiting list where we should be offered a berth for next year.

As part of that of course we may have a private pontoon moored between the piles with a boat each side and which we (and neighbours) neee to provide and maintain.

Has anyone got one of these at the moment and be willing to share ballpark costs of annual maintenance, lifespan of pontoon and cost to replace when end of life?

Thanks

I have owned my own pontoon in a marina for twenty years. The pontoon itself is over thirty years old. Maintenance is no more than fifty quid a year to replace any rotten wood. I would expect it to last at least another twenty years. This is in a marina so a lot more sheltered than a river. The pontoon is ten metres. The floats are polystyrene encapsulated in concrete. Don't know about replacement costs. There really isn't much to go wrong.

... cost to replace when end of life?

3-4k is the number usually bandied about. If the HM makes you an offer for a mooring with private pontoon, ask them what state its in. Part of the Hamble HMs remit is river safety, they can and have condemned private pontoons.

I've noticed that the Hamble/Warsash ferry chaps in their pink workboat move pontoons about, so I'm sure they'd give you an idea of how much they'd be charging if you opted to use them.

Replaced mine about 4-5 years ago at somewhere between 3-4k (its either 10 or 11 mtrs in length). Shared the cost with my neighbour, so I only paid half that cost. The chains need periodic replacement, perhaps every 5-7 years (maybe longer?) I think that was circa £150 using Tucker and Munday to supply the chains and do the work, although its obviously something you can do yourself.

Other than that I just spray the timber with patio magic once a year
