Hi, I am considering moving my 34' sail boat to the Hamble, can anyone advise how to get a mid river pontoon, perhaps subletting or joining a club.

Thanks

The Harbour Master has a waiting list that you can join for a small fee (£10 I think) but it won't get you a mooring until your name comes around, which may be a few years time. Some of the clubs have moorings for members but are limited in number; Warsash might be your best bet. Hamble River SC moorings are for boats less than 30ft. Royal Southern has only a few and they use a lottery system. RAFYC also have a few to allocate to members.

Most people go into a commercial marina and wait for their name to come up on the Harbour Master's list. The further up river you go the cheaper the moorings become but you would be lucky to find anything under £3000 p.a. Best bet would be at Deacons on a mid-river pontoon or a part-tide berth if you can take the ground. Elephant is worth a look too but it seems to be pretty full at the moment. Universal is reasonably priced too, being on the "wrong side" of the river.

Good luck. I'd be interested to hear what you find.

If you can dry out, Universal have a few semi-tidal pontoons that are around half the price of regular pontoons. Downside is having to plan departures/arrivals around the tide (though the staff are pretty good about letting you borrow a regular pontoon for a planned trip that clashes with the tide). However, you get a walk ashore berth with water and electric for, as mentioned, around half the price of a regular pontoon! We stayed there for a year and I can't complain. Only reason we left is we were leaving the country!

You can leave your boat on the visitors pontoon and pay by direct debit.

Worth considering where you'll keep your tender and park the car if out on the river.

Agree.

Even if you got a mooring from Derek Munday, you still need some degree of shoreside facilities: tender, car-parking, showers, let alone bar, restaurant, scrubbing-bays, launching slip, etc.

This, as well as what has proved to be a very broad base of sailing and social connections, was one of my main reasons for joining a club.

You have three to choose from: Warsash SC, Royal Southern YC and RAFYC, the latter two being on the Hamble side of the river, and the RAF being less expensive than the Royal Southern.

Although I'm eligible to enter the lottery each year for a club mooring, I've never done so. I'm keeping my own subcontractor mooring (Derek Munday) until my name comes to the top of the council waiting-list (waiting time for which is considerably shorter for boats sub-32ft), because its cheaper than the club's own moorings, and it gives me ongoing certainty rather than the yearly lottery.

I noticed a couple of weeks ago that Tucker and Munday were advertising available deep water berths. Anyone able to give a ball park figure for their costs?

I rang them on Wednesday. Am thinking about what I want to do for next year. We are 25 foot.

We talking about a free bouy just outside of Mercury.

£1300 + VAT
£200 + VAT for dinghy in Mercury
I assume that I would then need to pay Harbour fees @£126

So total cost would be £1926.

On top I would need to pay for shore storage for about a month a year. Ignorning the lift cost (as that would be the same in our out of a marina) the ashore package would be in the region of £200.

So I am looking at a cost of £2126.

I guess that Insurance would go up as well.

As we qualify for small boat charges, the marina fees are just over £3,000. I get 8 weeks ashore and some nights in other marinas.

When I did the maths it seems that I could lose the conviennce of the marina for less than a £800 saving. That doesnt seem a lot as I do spend quite a lot of time at the boat on non-sailing days and do get quite a lot out of the marina.

Hi Deacons yard at Burlstone really good area fantastic cafe ,showers ect we have just moved there, quiet and of course the jolly sailer pub next door cheers

The Stone pier Yard at Warsash are under new management and have some half-tide berths there whether any vacancies I don't know.

A 32' mooring is available, from August I believe, from Colin Fish(02380 453542) he also had a 25' one too, neither with pontoons though. He runs the Blue Star Cafe at Hamble.
No connection with either business.

As a follow-up to previous posts.
Why not join one of the sailing clubs on the Hamble, Warsash SC, or the RAFYC for have moorings and facilities for dinghy storage ashore. Club moorings at Warsash for instance are on a seniority of membership basis and released when the Harbourmaster offers a permanent Harbour Board mooring to the owner, the mooring is then offered to all club members during the season; these are somewhat cheaper than the contractor's moorings and a mixture of half-tide and deepwater trots. Dinghy stowage can be in a rack at a fixed rate or a ground berth at a per foot rate for the summer period April to October, and the winter Oct to March, also.

Another mooring source is the Hamble Warsash Ferry Co 07720438402
Mike Lindsell.
