Don't fit Easylock Midi clutches, they're rubbish.

I changed the ones serving my genoa and main halyards for Spinlock.

When I bought my boat it had 2 halyard winches on the cabin top. At the time many years ago I found another 2 quite cheap. So I have 4 halyard winches on a 21fter. I was later given a clutch which I pressed into service for the main halyard.
So now the jib always stays on a winch. The outhaul can be winched then removed to a cleat and I have 2 winches for reefing one front one back. Maybe one for vang. Overkill....maybe.... but it makes a beautifully shaped reefed main.

My point is that a small winch is not that much dearer than a clutch and it sure takes the load doesn't slip and is easy to release. Using the one clutch I have I still wrap the halyard around a horn cleat down rope from the clutch. Cos it does/has slipped.

No I don't expect everyone to agree but surely food for thought. olewill

None of the above!

Are a useful tool, and excellent at holding everything on a cruising boat.
When racing the norm is that the main and genoa halyards will go on a winch upwind to get a bit more tension in them, but then we really are talking about a lot of tension!

I found I didn't really need clutches. I use those little Spinlock lever jammers (SUA type). They are still pretty expensive, though. Keep an eye on ebay!
