Halogen oven and Fray Bentos pies

I have asked before, but I'll ask again. Do people REALLY eat FB pies? (I know that your post is tongue in cheek - or at least I hope that it is.)......

Yummy yummy

If you really want to impress SWMBO

Tin sweet and sour chicken from M&S.
Tin Oriental stir fry veg (JS)
1/2 jar Uncle Bens sweet and sour sauce (For extra sauce and pineapple)
2 slabs of egg noodles

Chicken and sauce can be done in m'wave at home or saucepan on boat.

Some brands of noodle only need soaking in boiling water

Takes a fraction of the time a FB pie takes to cook.

Very quick shepherds pie:

Heat tin cat/dog food + baked beans, put in Al foil dish, cover with smash, grate cheese on top and pop under grill for a few minutes.

( if fussy about this sort of thing use a tin of minced beef instead of the cat/dog food).

I got a halogen cooker for Christmas and have used it nearly every day. Cheaper than firing up the oven. But I am not sure I would soil it by cooking an FB pie in it.

My delicate constitution demands food of higher quality and elegance.

Are you kidding mate, you could buy them in Iceland for a quid a few weeks back (said to be reduced in ASDA to £1.85p!)I stocked up on dozens. That's the trouble with you married blokes you are too pampered!
I really think they are tasty (now they have reverted to the original gravy) though they should carry a Government heath warning if you eat them after about 6.They seem to take all night to digest & cause terrible indigestion:)
Married yes.

Does she cook for me - No

I do most of the cooking - although we occasionally cook together if we are entertaining.

Each to their own regarding the FB's.

If we eat out of a tin on board its M&S tinned curries etc.

Regarding the indigestion - again, I don't need to comment as the product has spoken for itself - again!

Before anyone thinks I am being a food snob, I have eaten FB pies - and certainly did as a student. I might even do so again, but it depends if I want to remain married or not as SWMBO won't touch the things... In the meantime, I will stick with 'cooking is preparing food from fresh ingredients' and trying to avoid processed and too many pre-prepared foods if possible.

And FB filling still looks like Pedigree Chum to me...

FB pies are still the top treat for my No3 son (now 17), although he does have a predeliction for those curious instant shepherd's pies ( Hachis Parmentier) you can get in France and the inevitable Pot Noodles.
I have to say that this descent into the basement of good food taste on his part only happens on board and when ashore he will sample the local cuisine like a good 'un.

My worst FB experience came on a trip to Salcombe with a group of mates. The skipper took charge of catering and arranged things so that grub would be up when we picked up the bouoy. The veg was fine, but he had failed to light the oven and the pies were still raw.
"Never mind," he said " We'll soon have them warmed up," thereby scooping them out of the tins into a frying pan and firing up the top burner.

A small mutiny followed after which we took the dinghy ashore and stripped the nearest chippie of its stock of Pukka Pies. The skipper bravely tackled his FB saute but the " appreciative noises" sounded a bit forced!

Steve, I'll listen out for your smoke alarm tonight, and be waiting armed with a fire extinguisher - or I could resort to throwing snow down your companionway.

I jest, I jest.

I hate food like FB tinned pies, but this thread has made me want one...

Recently bought one of these new fangled halogen ovens and thought I would surprise SWMBO tomorrow night with a meal totally prepared by me in said oven. Now there is a Fray Bentos S&K pie with a sell-by date coming up so I reckon with a pre-supper can of Pedigree or Old Speckled Hen and the FB in the oven I can really impress!

Fray Bentos! You certainly know how to treat a girl in style.

Are you going to give her a whole pie to herself? With the bunch of flowers you "borrowed" from the garden of remembrance, she'll be over the moon!:D:D

aha,

snake and pygmy pie ! Takes me back to scouting days, and trying to open one after it had been cooked with the lid firmly attached.

Must rush out and buy one, or three....

FB Tins,

For gods sake dont do what I did about 25 years ago.
SWMBO was in hospital having gall bladder operation, and I was at home with 5yr old son.
We fancied a Proper Sunday lunch, so we had some FB Beef slices in a tin.
Shoved 'em in the oven...well to cut a ls short about 1 hour later there was this huge bang...
Frightened the life out of me, went in the Kitchen to a scene of utter disaster... oven door hanging off by one hinge, beef and gravy splattered everywhere all up the walls floor everywhere!!
5yr old just wouldnt stop laughing, and of course the first thing he says to his mum when visiting is that daddy blew the oven up...!
I am still reminded of this event event 25yrs on..frequently.
Moral of the story is always pierce the bloody can.

Steve

My mother remarked on the surgeon she knew who was the terror of his staff about hygene. But, on his boat, made the tea from the same water used to boil the eggs.

FB pies taste quite good after a long and rough sail, in fact I have to stop SWMBO from getting them. Of course, since I can also remember, just, rationing, almost anything tasted good then.... Now, one prefers fresh stuff.

Re the OP. Not your best choice. Perhaps Bistro Diner or some other up market instant expertice.

FB think of everything. For you, the Fray Bentos Jake and Sidney pudding. Just heat in boiling water.

If you allow the water to come to the boil, be VERY CAREFUL.

Allow the tin to cool for a couple of minutes before attempting to open, otherwise, at the first incision, the contents will squirt out most inelegantly.

The other problem is the shape of the tin itself, very akward to open.

Conventional tin opener difficult and the rotating ones cannot get a proper grip on the rim.

Hammer and chisel perhaps ?:D

Crispy bits

35 years ago my mum was FB's biggest customer.

My greatest memory? Scraping round the inside of the rim with a knife to get the crisy bits off. I think 4 inches was my record.

Man, I feel young again.

I am going to rename them dog-food pies as that is what they look like to me!

If I tried to cook one for SWMBO the divorce solicitor would be making more money soon after.

Take this man outside immediately and have him shot !!!
He has obviously never come home to a cold batchelor flat, half pi**ed and famished!

FB fans look out !

There is a chap in the Azores who keeps an eye on the stocks of FB Steak and Kidney pies over here.

When the time is right, he lets go the ropes and sails to Gibraltar in one pull, single handed, in his Westerly Consort Duo.

Then he ties up in Marina Bay, sets a beeline for Morrison's Supermarket to the shelf piled high with these desireable tins.

He shovels the lot into a trolley, pays for them and makes off with the lot.

He then reappears a few months later and repeats the excercise.

I have been told this by a very reliable source in Annapolis.

I am also informed they are not for sharing or resale, but for his exclusive consumption.

I am also informed that the freeboard is noticeably affected by these well planned and executed raids:D
