Recently bought one of these new fangled halogen ovens and thought I would surprise SWMBO tomorrow night with a meal totally prepared by me in said oven. Now there is a Fray Bentos S&K pie with a sell-by date coming up so I reckon with a pre-supper can of Pedigree or Old Speckled Hen and the FB in the oven I can really impress!

A few questions:
How long and at what temperature should I cook the pie?
Jacket potatoes or a nice mash?
What veg? I’m thinking brussels or carrots & swede (possibly all 3?)
Should I do gravy or will it spoil the taste of the pie?

Plus any other suggestions; thanks in advance

It's a question of lubrication really.

Boiled/jacket potatoes too dry unless plenty of butter available.

If mash means creamed that is fine with FB pie.

Otherwise, gravy would help.

At least two veg of contrasting colour and texture ... brilliant.

I have asked before, but I'll ask again. Do people REALLY eat FB pies? (I know that your post is tongue in cheek - or at least I hope that it is.)

I am going to rename them dog-food pies as that is what they look like to me!

If I tried to cook one for SWMBO the divorce solicitor would be making more money soon after.

Fray Bentos pies are one of lifes little treats like corned beef spam and ulster fry. Now if I could fins a reliable sourrce od tinned steak and kidney pudding, (AKA babies heads) that would be excellent.

Mind you I am some one who can clearly remeber the joy at the end of the rationing of sweets, which was after I had started school

Yes of course people eat them! Fray Bentos are part of our emergency supplies on the boat. We've eaten them at lunch time, on their own as a hot snack whilst at sea, yummy. We've had them in the evening when the fresh supplies are running low with tinned peas and tinned potatoes. They are very handy. Everything has a sell by date by law, but common sense is more valuable than 'nanny'.

Whatever you do, make sure you cook it properly!!! (The pastry should be flaky, if it looks like wet plasticine it isn't done!)

I talk from experience, the last one I had was in 1992 when I was a student and made me violently ill (food poisoning, but that was probably aided by the state of the kitchen)

My grandma used to make a stew with the filliing (you can buy in tins) which was not bad at all.

Good luck!

The steak and ale FB is best, can't see how anyone could go to see without them! And bacon butties obviously. I'm planning a trip from Bangor to Cardiff next week, but have a veggie on board - what do veggies eat at sea?

Are you kidding mate, you could buy them in Iceland for a quid a few weeks back (said to be reduced in ASDA to £1.85p!)I stocked up on dozens. That's the trouble with you married blokes you are too pampered!
I really think they are tasty (now they have reverted to the original gravy) though they should carry a Government heath warning if you eat them after about 6.They seem to take all night to digest & cause terrible indigestion:)

I'm not sure I should bust the myth that motorboats are only provisioned with Champagne, Lobster, or Fillet Steak, but the truth is that Flower Power never departs without at least 2 FB onboard.

I can see my yachting experience is sadly lacking by not having FBs in the stores.
Is it possible to cook one without an oven? Biscuit tin on the stove maybe?

FB think of everything. For you, the Fray Bentos Jake and Sidney pudding. Just heat in boiling water.

That's a good idea,never thought of that.......your own portable oven,brilliant.
I wonder if there are any bright sparks on here that have figured out how to regulate them?
