Hallberg Rassy 352 stern cabin

I've been looking to buy a Hallberg Rassy 352 and have now viewed six. Each one seems to have, or have had, a problem with leakage into the stern cabin. In two cases this had clearly been so severe that all the lockers and shelving had been removed. Is this a generally prevalent fault or have I just been unlucky? And if anyone out there has a nice HR352 for sale, I would be happy to view!

This isn't something I've come across. My 352 is one of the last ones built, and the aft cabin certainly doesn't leak! The Hallberg Rassy Owners Association website has a forum (rather infrequently used) and you might check that for mentions of leaks.

I am also looking at the moment, What were the yachts you looked at? useful to cross them off my list. I am in Cornwall . Were the leaks through the deck?

I've looked at boats in Scotland, Solent, Gothenberg and Kalovig (Denmark). There were signs of leakage into the stern cabin on a number of these. I don't think it's my place on a public forum to make comments on specific boats. The boat that I am currently buying shows signs of a slight seepage into the stern cabin (starboard rear quarter) which I will need to get to grips with a.s.a.p!
 
Why HR? Get better stern cabin and quality from and older Scanmar 35. Before 1985 was best build and value for money. In 1985 company changed ownership and quality build suffered although hull still good. Been down this way so did the homework on all Swedish built boats.

The Scanmar 35 is a nice enough boat, but is rather lightly constructed compared with the HR352. The Scanmar has a displacement of around 5 tons, whereas the HR352 is 6.7 tons. I think most people would be hard pressed to discern any quality improvement over a HR352.

Really depends on what your thoughts are on displacement and design quality. For the price difference there is no contest IMHO. Most or all HR owners will always try to justify the extra cost for the name alone.
 
HRs are not hand-built old-fashioned specials. They come from a factory like sausages from a machine. It's a very clever operation but boats are built to the kind of specification that its original markets in Scandinavia and Germany demanded, before many people in the UK could afford them. Some of the smaller firms, such as Malo, have more of a hand-built character, and are more expensive.

I would be surprised if many 35s suffered water ingress as a result of build-failure. I would have thought a likely reason was owners leaving hatches open. Some earlier HRs suffered from water getting into the base of the mast support which sat on the "keel".
 
I have an HR38, very much like a stretched 352. When I bought her there was leak in the aft cabin, the intake duct for the heater had come off its fitting on the aft face of the cockpit coaming. Easily fixed once identified but that was the challenge – the water tracked behind the head lining and came out a couple of metres from source.

Have you considered HR38 instead? The difference in size is greater than you’d think.

Good luck in your search, I continue to be delighted with my boat. I do not think you could find a comparable new boat for the same money - or even for very much more money.
 
Back to the leaks and possible cause. On my 352 I did have water leaking into the 2 aft lockers. Took me 2 mins to fix. The water was seeping in via wires which had been threaded through from the anchor locker. Water drains to the lowest point and all I had to do was put a kink in the cables below where they exit the anchor locker en route into the aft cabin lockers. I would revisit the 352's you saw previously and check through deck 'previous owner' modifications. The 352 is a spectacularly well built, hard wearing boat.

Yep, the most likely source of water ingress is via the stern deck locker. Double check the seal around the locker and any cable entries + ensure the locker drain is clear. When arriving in port after a heavy sail, we opened the stern locker to deploy the kedge anchor for med mooring and found it full to the brim. Only took a piece of seaweed to cover the drain.
 
I have identified a leak in mine, one is around the vent on the aft deck, which leaked when leaves built up on deck and blocked the deck drains, also around the bolts on the cleats one of the four bolts was obviously letting water in, and also they tend to leak from the tiny drain that from under the seats,
