Having been very impressed with their tools before, i've just bought a Halfords Professional 90 piece socket set http://www.halfords.com/motoring/ga...rds-advanced-professional-90-piece-socket-set ....and I was pleasantly surprised to see that at the moment it comes with a free gift of an 8 piece professional screwdriver set.

Worth a look if you're needing some tools at the moment.

No connection, just thought it was a good deal!

I was browsing their website a few weeks ago and spotted a "3 for£10" deal. Trouble was that of the three sets of tools in the deal none were held in the local branch and no branch within about 50 miles had all three, so I rang their helpline and explained the situation. The guy on the phone was fabulous, told me he would get them sourced and shipped to my local branch, could I give him a few days though? Next day he rang and said he had found them all and they were getting sent and the local branch manager Kevin had my phone number and would let me know when they were available to collect. 2 days later Kevin rang and said I could go and collect at my convenience. So for £10 I got

1 x plier and wrench set containing 10 pliers various and 1 adjustable spanner
1 x screwdriver set containing 6 asst screwdrivers
1 x 42 piece stubby repair tool set containing .25 inch ratchet and 9 sockets, stubby hammer, stubby adjustable, screwdriver and bits and ext bars and set of pliers.

I will go back and shop there.

Guaranteed for life means only the non-moving parts i.e. handle, end of open ended spanner etc.

It doesn't cover any of the ratchet mechanisms and that's the usual part that breaks (or it was in my case :ambivalence:).

Good tools though.

Bargain, I wish i'd seen that!

I think Halfords tools are very good and guaranteed for life, mind and keep receipts in case you need to return something.

I managed to break a "Professional Series" 6mm combination spanner (trying to undo the ride height adjustment clamp on my DS) and thought I'd put the lifetime guarantee to the test. I walked into my local Halfords holding it with the broken end visible and as I entered a chap by the door saw it, said "you'll be wanting a replacement", and called "get this chap a new 6mm combination spanner" to the tool department. In about a minute I was walking out with the replacement - no fuss, no receipt and without even having to ask.

That's the only thing I have managed to break, and in general I think the "professional" is very good indeed. I believe that it's made by Facom.

I went for a very similar deal a couple of years ago after my Snap-On tools were stolen from my garage and never regretted it, brilliant tools, use then practically every day - well worth a look at in my opinion.

I managed to twist a Torq socket on motorcycle (possible by allowing it to twist out a bit). Halfords replaced it (approx. 4yrs old) no quibble. not sure if lifetime guarantee is limited to the Halfords "professional" range.

Value for money they beat Snap on IMHO.

I bought the same socket set as the OP shortly after we acquired the current boat. It is in regular use, everything from the tiny 7mm socket used for hoseclips to the largest spanners. Apart from one spanner which is in the innacessible part of the bilge for the time being it is still complete despite my co-owner's proclivity for opening it upside down and hurling tiny sockets everywhere. (Hint: If the lettering that says 'LIFT' on the catches is upside down, turn over before opening.)

I have the aluminium box set. It's great, so compact and has loads of tools.

In reality, the tools are mostly a bit crappy, but fine for everyday stuff.

Do not even think of comparing them with Snap On. Thats just stupidity....

The box for £75 is epic value just to keep on board and help you fix most day to day stuff though. can't argue with that!

A few years ago I bought a socket set from Halfords and almost immediately one of the locking catches on the plastic case broke. I took it back within a couple of weeks and was told the case was not guaranteed, only the tools. I had to argue with the manager to get the set replaced. Since then the ratchet has proved to be unreliable and I am not keen to buy tools from Halfords again. Recently I have been buying tools from Aldi and Lidl which seem to be better quality than Halfords.

I am glad others have had a better experience than me with Halfords but once bitten twice shy.

My mistake with the socket sets is to open them upside down and watch everything fall out. Now if only they molded the words "Other way up" on to the underside of the case.

I also have the same socket set and the quality is very good indeed. I payed around £90 and was a happy bunny. At £55 it has to be bargain of the year. I did stick a big blob of orange on the top of the case, though. For some reason, it's very easy to open it upside down.

EDIT - Just doubled checked and mines the 150 piece kit - current;ly selling for £100.

So it might not be the absolute bargain of the year but i would still heartily recommend Halfords Pro tools.

Small is good too

Several years ago I needed a Tork (star shaped ) bit to repair the door on the wife's car. Went to Halfords and bought the smallest Professional socket http://www.halfords.com/motoring/ga...advanced-professional-36-piece-socket-set-1-4
Proved to be brilliant and as others feels really good to use.I now have one set in the garage and one on the boat. Amazing how much easier it is to deal with hose clips for instance with this handy little kit. I have become quite anal about keeping the whole kit intact. I actually keep the box inside the original cardboard sleeve to prevent accidental opening and loss of contents. This sleeve is now wrapped in gaffer tape and should go on for a good while yet. One small kit is seldom beaten in a dismantling or servicing challenge from Ikea to Bosch to Lewmar and Volvo MD.
Makes a good birthday prezzie, request for yourself or gift for others.

I'm not a fan of Halfords in general, but very pleased with the Halfords socket set (think it's the Professional range) I bought about seven years ago, and has served well on the boat, motorbikes and cars since. Well made and a pleasure to use.

In fact I was thinking of buying another set to save having to cart it to and from the boat.
