boot sale tools are the best for the boat ;-)
my decent equipment stays home
Both my boys have Halfords stuff the sockets are not very good you'll round a nut off very quickly plus the standard size are not very deep

Halfords' standard stuff is nothing to write home about; it's the "professional" range which is really good.

As mentioned earlier their warranty doesnt inlcude anything that moves, including the head on a 1/2 breaker bar!
I use their ratchet spanners at work and the 10mm which I use almost daily doesnt last long at all.
As for comparing to snap on, there is no comparison IF you earn your living using tools.

I bought a tap and due set from Screwfix that would struggle to cut a thread in cheese so took it back and bought a similar but more expensive set from Halfords. I generally find Halfords to be quite expensive but their tap and die set worked a treat cutting thread into some stainless steel, I was very impressed.

I have the aluminium box set. It's great, so compact and has loads of tools.

In reality, the tools are mostly a bit crappy, but fine for everyday stuff.

Do not even think of comparing them with Snap On. Thats just stupidity....

The box for £75 is epic value just to keep on board and help you fix most day to day stuff though. can't argue with that!

This stuff being discussed here is the professional range, really nice solid feel and with the lifetime guarantee. I think you can compare them to snap on, especially at 1/4 of the price.

The only crappy bit about the tools is the plastic cases, the tabs always break off and although Halfords will replace the case for free, they never have the exact case you want.

I think Halfords tools are very good and guaranteed for life, mind and keep receipts in case you need to return something.

I played that game too. I happened to be travelling on business during the week and to the boat at the weekend which meant I could cast out further. An hour on their website searching for a store ... Sailsbury had all three :-)

The beauty of these lovely all in one tool kits is that most people already have lots of tools when they buy a "Kit". That means that a lot of individual sockets etc end up at car boot sales.Very cheap and you buy exactly what sizes you want. Just right for the boat where loss over the side or bilge and rust mean you don't weep so much.

they have the "professional range"
multi point sockets are fine on car or bikes but on marine applications !
only my opinion of course I prefer britool geodore snap on facom sykes pickavant even the cheap jcb socket sets are pretty good
so many times over the years I've brought good quality tools at boot sales not that its marine but I brought a full set of lead working tongs four pairs £20 ;-) a sykes pickavant hgv ball joint breaking tool for a fiver, at one boot sale come autojumbe down by the A3 I brought a sykes pickavant hydraulic pulley set for £40 saving well over £250 it added to my original set also a gold plated snap on ratchet screw driver for £26 OH YEAH the bloke fell off his perch when I said I didn't want the box he'd kept it on his mantelpiece ffs

That was my philosophy, but I question it. On a boat if you need to fix something quickly in an awkard place, having the good tools can be a blessing.

In my experience, cheap tools don't go swimming nearly as often as expensive ones. Neptune seems to prefer Snap On, Facom & the like for his tool kit

He must be a bugger for breaking 'em though, you'd have thought he'd have enough by now.

I have some Snap On tools and I also have the Halfords Professional range tools and you can definitely compare the two.

Snap-on used to make quite a lot of the Halfords Pro range and Facom (another excellent brand) do too. Oddly enough I'm not a huge fan of Snap-On ratchet tools as I've watched a few of their 1/4" square drive disintegrate whilst in use. This happened enough times for the RAF to replace them with Draper back in the 80's. I know that's a long time ago but they were just as expensive then - just shows that price doesn't always mean quality.

I've used Halfords Pro for the past 30 odd years and been happy with them - I do like the tip of painting "this way up" or something on the case though - embarrassed not to have thought of it myself.

Thanks for the heads up, Just picked up the 200 piece set for £150 (half price).

Oh and by the way this set has a moulded writing on the top and arrows on the metal clasps so you know which way is up!:-)
