Is it still open at this late stage of the season? Couple of years ago it was still there but shore access had been removed. Consequently no beer and unhappy crew. This year I'm going to Plan!!
Thanks
When we went past a couple of weekends ago the Felixstowe - Shotly - Harwich ferry was running from there so the shore access was there then.
Thinking about it I can not see how it would be to any ones advantage for the access to be removed.
It is a substantial thing and would be very expensive to remove.
I am sure it will be open as I don't think they move the access ramp at all. There might be a web site with info about it. I would not dream of staying overnight as it is exposed to constant swell from the passing boats, and indeed appears to expierience swell when there are no boats moving about. Far better to have a whip round the crew and go to Shotley and have a walk to the Bristol Arms.
I have never yet found a decent pub at Harwich and indeed it is one of the least interesting places I have ever been to.
I have had some good runs ashore at Harwich, the pubs are good, most have Adnams and some have live music, plus the occassional fight. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Probably not family friendly, but hey, at least they're real pubs that don't sell little piles of pate type goo with dandelions on top There is lots of georgian architecture plus some much older, including assorted old lighthouses and the Electric Theatre. This is a working area that probably doesn't display it's charms openly but worthy of a walk round.
Personally I wouldn't use the Ha'penny Pier overnight because of the swell and the noise the gangway makes when you've got a hangover. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Never known them to remove the gangway though.

Used it couple weeks ago OK then, inside is best, being a substantial structure very little swell inside. Just dont moore there this Sunday pm as myself and two other hooligans are planning a visit to the flesh pots of dear old Harwich
Never heard of the ramp being removed. I would be quite annoyed paying a tenner knowing I could not get to the Alma for a pint or two.
Agreed, inside is best in a small yacht - bow facing shotley. That way you pitch rather than roll. The downside is that this section of pier is by the ramp and you get foot traffic noise. I always tie my fenders to the quay horizontally when overnighting as my gunwales are the exact height of the pier, the often ride when attached to the boat.
The harbourmasters are abosulutey great - and really enjoy their jobs which makes up for a lot in my book.
I believe the gangway is removed in bad weather - the pontoons move a fair bit in an NE gale.
We really enjoy an occassional visit to Harwich - either a meal at the Pier Hotel or Fish'n'Chips sitting on the beach looking across at the estuary and Felixstowe Docks. It's a long way to a good supermarket though.
I have stayed there without problem but on the inside.I disagree that Harwich is not interesting. We had the guided tour round the town & it has some historic buildings & interesting facts.Although one of the pubs claimed that Nelson stayed there it seems from the local records that although he visited he did not disembark the ship. The townsfolk wre ready to parade him round the town & were not happy.
Pipedream was telling me that he was there last weekend. Friendly welcome from HM who berthed him on the inside.
We went to the Harwich Heritage Day a few Saturdays ago - very interesting old town and the fort is well worth a visit - tucked behind the row of white house that you can see from the water but with commanding views over the harbour. Amazing that you can't see it from the sea.
P.S. Essex and Suffolk senior citizens can use their bus pass on the Shotley/Harwich/Felixstowe foot ferry £1 instead of £3.50 each way. Anyway you need to book as it only holds 12.
As I write this I am on the Ha'penny Pier(thought I would give it another chance, bouncing around a little bit. It's very busy because of the sea shanty night with barges and loads of other boats - busier than I've seen it in the summer! and am rafted up on the outside. Usual good service and banter from the HM who says that this is the last night of the season he charges.
However, until April there will no showers/toilets and you will have to take pot luck for a space with the fishing boats.

Came past HP about 5.30 after a trip up the Wallet thinking - bit off season so will get inside - never seen so many boats on the Pier both inside and out.
So as I write this I'm in Shotley after a couple of glasses of red and a "maximus glutinus" in the Shipwreck feeling good and not bouncing around.
Seriously though the Pier is great as long as you get inside - Harwich is very interesting and makes a good day ahore.
