Anybody own a Hagg? Or know anymore?

See here http://www.classicoffshore.com/blog/history-of-the-sport/the-lost-history/ Spirit of Ecstasy, seems she was mid sixties, and looks like a design of that period. There a similar one in the Solent, fab looking boat.

And there is this Hagg too http://www.sandemanyachtcompany.co.uk/yacht/453/hagg-36-flybridge-tsdy-1972

Seems to be a boat designed with a fascinating history, but little known or talked about https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Ernest_Hagg So much so that I suspect this thread will bomb.

Looks way more contemporary than 1972. Handsome craft, such lovely lines.

Yes, I think it is a Hagg and its not a coincidence! (I think its Island Harbour and I have to pass there this week)

About 14 months ago I was being picked up by Dick Atcherley in his boat in Yarmouth from the fuel berth. A very interesting boat was milling about waiting for fuel. I was quite taken with it, but didn't know what it was.

I now think its the boat next to the Princess, I'm not sure how I came to think its Hagg though. But anyway, the ebay listing of the Princess made me recall about Hagg so I started this thread!

I used to skipper a Hagg 42 (Legend) in Lymington.
Owner had a large platform on the transom, which had 2 large opening doors. It also had a heavy generator under the aft deck, which made the stern heavy, reducing speed drammatically. Also very wet on flybridge & in inside helm.
This vessel was sunk, when with diver aboard including their heavy bottles at stern deck, the the 'skipper' stopped the boat which was progressing at speed, with stern doors open. Subsequently the following wash, flooded over the open stern deck, throgh the open stern saloon watertight doors, into the wheelhouse, down into the forepeak cabin, resulting in a 'crashdive' to the bottom in the Needles Channel. Boat was recovered & reinstated some time later.

bloody hell!

There was a 36 on the River Shannon for years. Lovely boat, way ahead of its time. Think it was called Silver Birch.
I also saw in a thread on another site a while back, that there is one near Dublin. I think it’s the same boat.
Someone also mentioned there was one on Lough Erne.

The boat in the picture is a Hagg and it is at Island Harbour. I drove past it last week.
I think they were cold moulded and right at the end possibly a couple of GRP ones were built.
Poole Harbour also produced some examples of Cox and Haswell powerboats as did Elkins in Christchurch.
The boat that used to draw my attention was called Colinette V.
Owned by the late Peter Cadbury of Chocolate family. Twin Sabre brazil blocks and North of 30 knots.

I have a Hagg36-seahunter
great boat
spent last 5 years doing up (and still looks pretty rough) but goes lovely. I did a lot of research but could get much beyond what's posted here- aurthur hagg designed the boat he was ex airplane designer - did the tiger moth. There is an article in the uk national maritime museum archives they sent me about a hagg 36 called swizz. could do 30knots - it had 2 crystler imperial engines 1956. I think mine is 1963 . I can post on the article and few pic s of Seahunter if you like. originals perkins T6354 running well ( for now)

My old man moved around in powerboating circles in the sixties and seventies, and I remember Spirit of Ecstasy. She had Rolls-Royce engines (hence her name) and istr her owner, Steve Macey, had the usual trade mark wrangles with RR in consequence of wanting to use their logo on the boat. Even in those days, she was way off the mark against the other machinery she was racing (though she generally did well when it was rough) but she was very lavish below decks (I went on board her, once) and always won the Cowes-Torquay Concours d'Elegance :). Sad that she was broken up.
