Anybody know what's happening to the plan to revive Gypsy Moth from her concrete coffin at Greeenwich? All seems to have gone v. quiet since the fanfare last autmn.

i had a look at the boat last weekend. Jeez, it's a mess. There seems no aspect of the boat (eg sheer bulk, material, design) that would lead one to think "well, at least it's ...."

So, Nope, all gone quiet. Much better to get a AWB, paint it nasty Austin A35 green and have a go in that.

No news is...

Basically, yes it has gone quiet. After initial enthusiasm last Autumn and a moderately encouraging survey, the experts had another look at her shortly after the Boat Show. Sadly she has suffered further vandalism and has deteriorated sharply. We are awaiting decisions from boatyards and money people at the moment but it may be that she is declining faster than we can put together a rescue package. I don't want to be too specific about anything at the moment but the project has undoubtedly reached a crisis point.

Re: No news is...

That is really sad news. Gipsy Moth is one of Britain’s heritages (IMHO). As an inspired 10 year old when Sir Francis took her round the world he made sailing interesting for me and is one of the reasons I sail now. I still have a personal reply letter from him when I sent him a school boy's letter with questions regarding his OSTA in earlier GM's.
The boat cannot just be let to go!! Can it?

Under cover?

Maybe the answer is to lift it out of its present position and move it to an indoor maritime museum, doing enough cosmetic restoration to make it look reasonably ship-shape?

Decking

Gypsy Moths deck isn't teak as far as i remember, but the new-regulation sandy emulsion.

Anyway, i think it;s had it internally due rotting and er possibly moths. And outside it's had it, partly due to gypsies . Hence, very well named I suppose. they weren't built to last very long anyway as this one is already number four, no?

Re: Decking

most succinct
In life one often gets people who sit on the sidelines and damn people with faint praise.
The Hon. JJermain is obviously working his boot-tops off trying to get this moth project going and there'll be loads of stuff he's doing all the time - tirelessly - as thats his style.
The Twisted one on the other hand has little to do at the moment and so sent this scurrilous and most mischevious post onto the forum. The main aim of my response was to try to get him to see the error of his ways, little chance I fear and to get his giving hand into the considerable depths of his pockets and bung the project a few bob or a bit of old teak that he has lying around. He seems to have gone very quiet at present but no doubt once his afternoon medication has begun to work he'll respond on his way to his commode.

Re: Under cover?

Absolutely. But no one at the moment has any money to do it with and no one wants to take a potentially rotten hulk into their yard without some guarantee that it will leave again.

Re: Fundraising

hm, tho I am not sure that everyone is being as resourceful as they might be regarding the project. I think it is always best to use naturally occurring materials of a type found within the local environment. Now, about fifty yards from the gypsey moth is the cutty sark, still plated below the waterline with pure copper sheathing worth at a conservative estimate £400,000 - almost exactly the amount of loot required for a restoration with a tidy sum for the beer kitty. Trouble is, the job would need someone with special skills and experience of extracting 100,000 fastenings in order to liberate the copper in aid of this important project.
