Good chaps. They even know how to spell ‘gybe’, so no need for jibes there. We were on the Broads in the ‘50s. My father had a friend who was not a good sailor and I was about 12 at the time. I think I was on the motorboat which we slept on while my father and friend were sailing the Yare and Bure one-design we also had, and my father’s friend achieved a Chinese gibe. When he later became my headmaster, the memory of this prevented me from seeing him with all the respect that he thought was his due.
